Clarence Robinson has spent a lot of time in SAISD.

The 1967 Sam Houston alumnus came back to the district and joined the custodial team at Wheatley Middle School in 2003. He worked his way up to head custodian and remained there until Wheatley closed in 2017, when he and his team came to Steele Montessori.

“When I first got to Steele, I was walking down the hall, and students were in line,” Robinson said. “Some of them just came out and hugged me.”

Working at the Montessori academy for the last 10 years and moving with the campus to the former Forbes Elementary site, he’s had a chance to get to know the students, families and teachers, who take a lot of pride in the condition of their school.

“I like that the teachers and the kids help us,” Robinson said. “And the parents, I like that about them, they come in and they want to help. We work at this together.”

Working with a team of two custodians and a porter, Robinson starts his days early at 6 a.m. checking to make sure everything is ready for the day.

In the afternoon, he aims to work alongside his team and encourage collaboration, setting restrooms and hallways as their first priorities.

“I'm out here with you,” he says to his team. “I see you. Nobody works the same, but all I'm looking for is results. So, if you help each other, that's even better. Working together, that’s what I strive for.”

An avid musician, Robinson enjoys spending his spare time performing with his church choir. He made fourth chair drums at Sam Houston his freshman year of high school, going on to record an album with the band his senior year of high school at Municipal Auditorium. He also sang with the Golden Gospel Flames, founded in 1969 and the historic Walker-Ford Gospel Singers in the 1970s.

“I love music,” he said.

Clarence Robinson ha pasado mucho tiempo en SAISD.

El exalumno de Sam Houston que se graduó en 1967 regresó al distrito y se incorporó al equipo de conserjes de la secundaria Wheatley Middle School en 2003. Fue ascendiendo hasta llegar a jefe de conserjería y permaneció en ese puesto hasta que Wheatley cerró en 2017, momento en el que él y su equipo se incorporaron a Steele Montessori.

«Cuando llegué por primera vez a Steele, iba caminando por el pasillo, y los estudiantes estaban en fila», dijo Robinson. «Algunos de ellos simplemente se acercaron y me dieron un abrazo».

Tras haber trabajado en la academia Montessori durante los últimos 10 años y haberse trasladado junto con la escuela al edificio donde antes estaba la primaria Forbes Elementary, ha tenido la oportunidad de conocer a los estudiantes, las familias y los maestros, quienes se sienten muy orgullosos del aspecto en que se encuentra su escuela.

«Me gusta que los maestros y los niños nos ayuden», dijo Robinson. «También de los padres, me gusta eso de ellos, vienen y quieren ayudar. Trabajamos en esto juntos».

Robinson, que trabaja con un equipo formado por dos conserjes y un portero, empieza sus jornadas temprano, a las 6 de la mañana, comprobando que todo esté listo para el día.

Por la tarde, su objetivo es trabajar junto a su equipo y fomentar la colaboración, dando prioridad a los baños y los pasillos.

«Estoy aquí con ustedes», le dice a su equipo. «Los veo. Nadie trabaja igual, pero lo único que busco son resultados. Así que, si se ayudan mutuamente, es aún mejor. Trabajar juntos, eso es lo que me propongo».

Robinson, un apasionado de la música, disfruta pasar su tiempo libre cantando en el coro de su iglesia. En su primer año de preparatoria, se convirtió en el cuarto baterista de Sam Houston y, posteriormente, grabó un álbum con la banda en su último año de preparatoria en el Auditorio Municipal. También cantó con los Golden Gospel Flames, fundados en 1969, y con los históricos Walker-Ford Gospel Singers en la década de 1970.
