Questions & Answers:
Bond 2020 Renovations at M.L. King Academy

What is the status of renovations at M.L. King Academy?
The M.L. King Academy renovations are currently in design. To help address industry pressures during the pandemic, the bond projects were placed in phases to stagger construction. The design for King Academy, which was placed in Phase 3, is being revised to accommodate additional students the campus will receive under Rightsizing. The architect is expected to share the new designs with the community this spring.

When will construction begin on our school?
The district expects to break ground on the renovation by December 2025, barring any adverse weather or unforeseen circumstances that may cause delays.

What is included in the renovation?
The current King Academy campus will be substantially renovated, including classrooms; science labs; fine arts space (and a performing arts addition will be built); gym; athletic and P.E. support spaces, such as locker rooms; cafeteria and kitchen; auditorium; main office and main entrance; window replacement; mechanical systems; parking lots and driveways; and playground.

When will we be able to move into our renovated school?
Construction will last about two years from the groundbreaking, and then a move-in date that coincides with a school break would need to be selected for move-in to the new M.L. King Academy.

Which grades will be served at the renovated campus?
After the renovation, M.L. King Academy will remain an academy. However, in addition to Head Start through 8th grades, it will also serve pre-kindergarten students.

How will parents and students have a voice in the process?
Your principal will be forming a Project Advisory Team that includes parents, students, teachers, and community members to represent the larger M.L. King Academy community. The group will provide input on the project during the design phase.

How can I stay informed about the progress of the project?
In addition to future community meetings and periodic updates from your campus, you can follow progress:

 - On the bond website. You can also use the Bond 2020 button at the bottom left of the M.L. King Academy homepage to link directly to your school’s project page.
