English I integrates the study of comprehension, response, multiple genres, author's purpose and craft, composition, inquiry, and research.

English IV integrates the study of comprehension, response, multiple genres, author's purpose and craft, composition and inquiry and research with increased complexity and nuance. Students refine their skills in order to think critically and adapt to the ever-evolving nature of language and literacy.

English IV Dual Credit (#1244D)

English IV DC is a college-level course composed of thematic units grounded in the study of British literature.

English IV Independent Study (#1250)

Independent Study in English focuses on a specialized area of study such as the work of a particular author or genre. Students will read and write in multiple forms for a variety of audiences and purposes.

Advanced Broadcast Journalism I (#1741)

The AP English Language and Composition aims to deepen students’ understanding of how language functions rhetorically: to communicate a writers’ intentions and elicit readers’ responses.

AP Literature and Composition English IV (#1246)

The college-level Literature and Composition course requires analyzing and evaluating imaginative literature. Students write critically to express the depth and complexity of a work.

College Prep English Language Arts (#1707)

In this college-preparatory course, students improve integrated critical reading and writing skills while engaging with texts from a variety of content areas and genres. Successful completion of the course grants students exemptions from Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA) requirements for English at the partnering institutions.

Contemporary Media emphasizes a study of how media influence tastes, behavior, purchasing, and voting decisions.

Practical Writing (#1451)

Practical Writing emphasizes skill in the use of conventions and mechanics of written English, the appropriate and effective application of English grammar, the reading comprehension of informational text, and the effective use of vocabulary.

Term:  Semester Credit:  0.5 Grades:  9th - 12th

Special Notes: This course is offered as a semester-long course for 0.5 credit (instead of 1.0 credit) under 1452.  For a year-long course is 1.0 credit, use course 1816.


Practical Writing for Newcomers (#1816S)

Practical Writing for Newcomers emphasizes skill in the use of conventions and mechanics of written English, the appropriate and effective application of English grammar, the reading comprehension of informational text, and the effective use of vocabulary specifically for students who are newly arrived to the U.S.

English Language Development & Acquisition I (#1301)

This course is designed to provide instructional opportunities for secondary recent immigrant students who still have little or no English proficiency. This course must be taken concurrently with a corequisite language arts class.
