Draw the Line/Respect the Line (DTL/RTR) and Reducing the Risk (RTR) are core components of our Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) Program. These evidence-based curricula are part of a national effort aimed at preventing teen pregnancy across the U.S. Supported by the Office of Population Affairs (OPA), these programs receive funding to implement proven strategies and develop innovative approaches to prevent teen pregnancy, reduce sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among adolescents, and promote overall health.
Draw the Line/Respect the Line is a 3-year, evidence-based curriculum designed to promote abstinence by equipping students in grades 6-8 with the knowledge and skills to prevent HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy. Through an interactive approach, the program teaches students how to establish personal limits and navigate challenges to those boundaries. It also emphasizes the importance of respecting others' limits. All student materials are available in both English and Spanish.
-Grade 6: Focuses on non-sexual pressures, such as peer pressure to steal, drink alcohol, or smoke. Lessons include setting personal limits and refusal skills, along with parent-child communication activities that explore cultural and family values. There are 5 lessons.
-Grade 7: Shifts to the pressures of sexual activity, discussing the short-term consequences of unplanned sex and STDs. Lessons focus on applying refusal skills in social situations, with parent-child communication about intentions to avoid sex and handle risky scenarios. There are 7 lessons.
-Grade 8: Features topics such as HIV prevention, refusal skills in dating situations, and condom use demonstrations. The curriculum includes discussions about HIV's impact on affected individuals, with 7 lessons in total.
The DTL/RTR program uses a variety of teaching methods, including role-playing, mini-lectures, brainstorming, group work, games, videos, guest speakers, and an anonymous question box.
Reducing the Risk (RTR) is a 16-session curriculum for high school students, focusing on delaying sexual activity or ensuring protection against pregnancy and STDs/HIV for those who choose to have sex. This research-proven program teaches essential skills like risk assessment, communication, decision-making, refusal strategies, and delay tactics. Students are encouraged to reflect on their values and discuss their decisions with their parents.
Two key skills are emphasized:
-Refusal skills: Teaching students how to confidently say no to sex or unprotected sex, without damaging relationships or leaving room for misunderstanding.
-Delay tactics and alternatives: Helping students navigate or avoid risky situations, giving them time to think and make informed decisions.

In SAISD, we've created a platform called TP3 to assist teachers in supporting current and future grants with data. This platform tracks key information such as demographics, gender, lessons taught under the DTL or RTR curriculum, and attendance for each individual receiving instruction.
