World Languages Courses

  • American Sign Language I (#5301)

    This course is an introductory course of the study of the receptive and expressive aspect of signs, non-manual
    communication, and grammatical features of ASL in everyday situations and other meaningful contexts.
    Students will learn basic introductions, greetings, describe people in general, and talk about family members.

    Term:  Full Year Credits:  1.0 Grades:  9th - 12th


    American Sign Language II (#5302)

    This course will develop signing skills in various everyday situations and further explore cultural perspectives
    of the deaf community. The course expands students’ conversational range from talking about themselves to
    talking about other people and activities, giving directions, describing people, and making requests.

    American Sign Language III (#5303)

    This course will develop structures and vocabulary necessary to interact socially and communicate in daily
    living situations. Through meaningful communication contexts, students will use communicative functions
    which include locating things, asking for solutions, discussing life events, and describing objects.

    American Sign Language IV (#5304)

    This course provides more complex ASL grammatical features, communicative functions and receptive
    fingerspelling and numbers. Students will learn to effectively transcribe ASL into standard English and will
    learn to communicate at an intermediate level.

    This course develops listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills with an emphasis on grammar, culture, and communication. Students learn to use language meaningfully and begin to develop the proficiency to communicate as well as demonstrate an understanding of the practices, perspectives, and products of the target language and culture.

    Chinese II (#5262)

     

    This course further develops the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills building upon the basic structures, functions, and vocabulary learned in level I. The course continues with advanced structures and vocabulary to increase language proficiency, awareness, and appreciation of diverse cultures.

    This course prepares students for the successful completion of the International Baccalaureate Program. The course continues with advanced structures and vocabulary to increase language proficiency, awareness, and appreciation of diverse cultures.

    This course is an advanced measure and independent study course designed to facilitate the production of original literature study. Students, with the guidance of their teacher, build a portfolio of products/literary studies as a process towards a final presentation.

    This course will make connections with other disciplines, research to expand cultural knowledge from a variety of French-speaking cultures and incorporate project-based learning activities all in the target language.

    AP French IV (#5237)

    This course offers students the opportunity to further develop oral communicative skills through cooperative activities and oral presentations. Students will deepen their understanding of French cultures and civilization. It prepares students for AP/IB/DC/ courses.

    AP French V (#5238)

    IB French Standard Level Year I (#5245)

     

    This course is for students with some previous experience in the target language. The study of grammar and writing conventions is integrated in the course work and oral participation is an essential element of this course.

    IB French Standard Level Year II (#5246)

    This course seeks to further develop all four language learning skills (reading, speaking, writing, and listening) by exploring current topics through a variety of authentic media.     This course is for students with some previous experience in the target language. Students will develop all four language learning skills (reading, speaking, writing, and listening) by exploring current topics through a variety of authentic media. The study of grammar and writing conventions is integrated in the course work and oral participation is an essential element of this course. Please note that this class features a literary component.

    IB French Higher Level Year II (#5248)

    This course is the second year of a two-year course leading to the IB examination. External assessment at HL consists of exercises to demonstrate understanding of texts based on the core themes and an extended written passage. Internal assessment for HL tests students’ abilities in listening and speaking in a genuine conversation format.

    IB French AB Initio Standard Level Year I (#5249)

    This course is designed for students with no previous experience in—or very little exposure to—the target language. Language ab initio students develop their receptive, productive, and interactive skills across a range of contexts and purposes that are appropriate to the level of the course.

    AP Japanese IV (#5274)

    This course is centered on practice in Japanese conversation emphasizing simple, everyday expressions as well as the more sophisticated grammar and vocabulary of natural conversation. The goal of the course is going beyond just survival in Japan: students farther expand their knowledge and skills of Japanese, understanding and utilizing authentic materials for communication, being able to discuss various topics by expressing both facts and their perspectives.

    This college level course will allow you to read and analyze Latin literature as you explore ancient Roman history and culture. You will translate passages from the writings of Vergil and Caesar and examine them through class discussions, debates, and presentations.
