Janelle plans to go to college to study to be an aesthetician.

What is the greatest challenge you have overcome during your education so far and how did you overcome it?

The loss of my childhood best friend. She passed away on the Fourth of July 2022 from gun violence. Her being 16, and us being the same age, I thought my life was over. I thought it stopped there. It set me back in school. But then I thought she would want me not to be like that and just be stuck. She would want to see me succeed. I basically did this for her. She pushed me to snap out of whatever I was in. She’s not able to do this with me, so I did this for her. I did it for myself, but I did it for her too because she can’t. I did it for both of us.

Who has been most influential to you in your education this far and why?

Ms. Dillon definitely helped me a lot. I came to Cooper with just 6 credits and only two STAARS done. I felt so supported by her. Everything and anything that I needed help with she helped me, she never rushed me, she never judged me. It was always open doors with her. She also made me feel very confident graduating

Neveah James

Neveah will attend college to study to be an obstetrician.

Who has been most influential to you in your education this far and why?

There are so many people, but I would have to say Ms. Lanie. When I first met her, I was going through a lot. She helped me open up on my feelings, but she also understood me. Ms. Lanie always made sure Heaven and I were okay, and made sure mentally I was okay, and I needed that.

Today, I am able to show my daughter what hard work, self confidence, and determination can do. I want her to know that her mother is strong. I want her to know that she is my number one priority, and I want her to know that she is the reason that I am standing before you as a graduate.

As a leader of the Class of 2024, what is your hope for the Class of 2024 as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

My hope for them is to keep being the amazing person that you are. If you have a dream, don't let anyone stop you, and when you fall, get back up and try again.

Fernando Gallardo

Fernando will attend the University of Texas at San Antonio to study electrical engineering. 

How did you choose your pathway?

I plan to go to university and start working in electrical field. I chose electrical because when I was in Mexico, I used to work with my mom on tiny lamps. I would connect the tiny light bulb with the wires and that’s what got me into the field.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome in your education so far?

The biggest challenge was the first years when I came over here. I didn’t know English or anything. I arrived with my aunt and her family and they had a place for me to live, but it was hard for me because I missed my parents while I was trying to learn the new environment here. Over there in Mexico we didn’t have a lot of resources. It was hard to try new things. My parents and my sister always encouraged me to try things. 

As a leader of the Class of 2024, what is your hope for the Class of 2024 as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

I hope for them to improve with education or outside with business. Anything that they want to try, I hope they can always go to the next step in whatever they choose.
