How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

“I feel like I've been to some very interesting schools. Growing up I moved around a lot, so I went to Highland Park elementary for a little bit, then Japhet elementary. Then it became an academy so I was able to grow up with more people in school, and it helped me grow more confidence and become comfortable with the people around me. It's been really cool to watch everyone grow up. Then going into high school, it's cool because you get to follow more people that you know. So going to Travis has been really interesting, and I don't know if other school districts have similar programs, but being able to be in SAISD and finding Travis has helped a lot, especially with financial need."

Who has been most influential in your education this far and why?

I've known Ms. Hanley throughout the entirety of high school, so being able to build a relationship with her, like she's basically a second mom to me. She understands what it's like, the trans struggle, because she has a trans family member, so her being able to know what that's like and experience, she's been able to help me out and help me through different struggles. She's helped me connect with resources that I needed that I wouldn't have been able to do on my own. Not only that, she's a big supporter and she's really helped me with my writing and better myself within my academics. Ms. Fuentes has really helped me with my college career. She's really helped me with all my applications and scholarships, which is why I got to where I am with Questbridge and Rice. I'm really grateful for them and the help that they've given me.

Joshua will attend Texas Tech and study computer science.

How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

I think SAISD has a lot of great support systems and programs to help students through high school. Our school has Ms. Fuentes who helps with college applications, as well as any teacher who is just happy to write letters of recommendation and give advice on what we can do in our future. They also push us to work towards our goals and its been really important and has really helped me.

As a leader of the class of 2024, what is your hope for the Class of 2024 as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

My biggest hope for the class of 2024 is for them to persevere through the struggles that might come in the rest of their lives. Being a Travis scholar and San Antonio College graduate, I feel like it was very challenging and there was a lot of obstacles. If they've already conquered that, I feel like throughout the rest of their lives, there's nothing they can't conquer and persevere through.
