District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC)

 

Mission Statement

The District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC) - serves in an advisory capacity to the Office of Family and Community Engagement (FACE) and SAISD on matters related to family engagement, curriculum, mental health, safety, etc.  

Purpose Statement
To provide solution driven academic support by:

  • Seeking family & community feedback on District-wide initiatives
  • Offering parent resource information and support
  • Communicate inquiries and/or suggestions related to the child’s educational journey

Through a collaborative and consensus-minded approach, the Council will express notable programmatic concerns, systemic issues, potential solutions, and recommendations to District leadership. 

To help the district achieve its mission to transform SAISD into a national model urban school district where every child graduates and is educated so that he or she is prepared to be a contributing member of the community.

Action Statement

DPAC is committed to taking an active role in advocacy and leadership within the SAISD community. Our members serve as informed leaders, dedicated to:

  • Advocating for the needs and concerns of families and students at both the district and school levels.

  • Sharing vital district information and updates within their communities to ensure transparency and awareness.

  • Representing the voices of their communities, bringing diverse perspectives to district discussions.

  • Collaborating with school and district leaders to drive positive change and enhance the educational experience for all students.
Through these actions, DPAC members strive to bridge the gap between families and the district, ensuring that every voice is heard and every concern is addressed

  • Selections Criteria - 

    • Must have a child enrolled in SAISD or live within the SAISD boundaries.
    • Total applicants from campus/single member districts will be considered as a selection criteria
    • Overall district involvement will be considered as a selection criteria
    • District staff employees cannot participate as council members, as the meeting time interferes with district duty time.
    • Council applications are reviewed on a monthly basis, applicants will be notified of their application status by the 1st of each month.

  • Yes, an appeal can be made based on the application process. To inquire more about this process please contact (210) 554-2205 or email familyengagement@saisd.net.
  • Council members will:

    • Be solution driven for overall academic student success
    • An active participant which is measured by:
      •  Commitment level & engagement is necessary for all meetings
        • If you are not able to attend a meeting, please notify the Office of Family and Community Engagement as soon as possible to indicate your continued interest.
        • If communication is not expressed within 3 consecutive months to the Office of Family and Community Engagement, the department will move forward with seeking a replacement to participate in DPAC.

    o   Participate through open dialogue/questions & answers/feedback surveys/etc.

    o   Commitment to working group projects based on current district initiatives or parent feedback as requested by the Office of Family & Community Engagement. 

    • Adhere to meeting norms including:
      • Being responsive
      • Being engaged
      • Respecting everyone's opinion - no retaliation 
      • Staying open minded
      • Being mindful of meeting time
      • Parking lot any ideas that may be off topic
  • The Office of Family & Community Engagement shall determine whether a meeting will be held in person or remotely, and Council members shall be expected to attend the meeting as outlined in the expectations of section 2. Meeting attendance is limited to identified members and senior leadership. The first Council meeting of the year shall be held in the month of September. Notice for the first Council meeting of the year will be sent by the Office of Family & Community Engagement via email or telephone at least 7 days prior to the anticipated date of the meeting.
