Bruce Adams, band director at Sam Houston High School and the school's 2024 Teacher of the Year, was named the Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Alamo Area Alliance of Black School Educators at a banquet May 4. 

An alumnus of SAISD, Adams attended Gates and Hirsch Elementary Schools, Davis Middle School and graduated from Sam Houston High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Florida A&M University. He has now been teaching in SAISD for 27 years, 17 of those at Sam Houston.

“Mr. Adams is not just a band director; he is a mentor and role model for our students,” Dr. Nakeshia Bibbs, principal of Sam Houston High School, said in his nomination materials. “His commitment to their personal growth is evident in his actions. He ensures that every student feels valued and supported, regardless of their background or ability. His genuine care for their well-being extends beyond the rehearsal room, as he takes the time to listen to their concerns, offer guidance, and celebrate their successes.”

Adams walked the steps of his students as he participated in the marching band at Sam Houston in the 1980s. 

“I am most proud to have been in the Sam Houston band,” Adams said. “I particularly loved playing in the jazz band. We opened a concert for jazz great Nancy Wilson and then had the privilege to attend her concert.  I loved marching as well. The friendships that were formed are still prevalent today.”

After starting his teaching career at Herff and Carroll elementaries in the 90s, he moved to M.L. King Middle School for seven years before coming to Sam Houston. The whole time, Adams said he prepared students for the next level. 

At Sam Houston, that has meant a focus on postsecondary readiness. 

“I quickly reached out to directors from the university level to find out what my students needed to know to be awarded a scholarship to be able to be a student first, and then a collegiate band member,” Adams said. “After processing the expectations, I quickly transformed those expectations for my students. My students could not perform if their grades were below an 80. My students had to learn how to read music at the collegiate level. My students were expected to be an example for other students in the classroom.” 

The challenge worked. The Hurricane Band program has produced two valedictorians, three salutatorians, and over 40 top ten students. To date, his students have earned more than $500,000 in college scholarships.

He has also connected his students with his alma mater, Florida A&M, to attend an annual summer band camp at the HBCU, which has helped them develop their marching and performance style that is unique to the area. 

“Mr. Adams has transformed our band program into a thriving hub of musical excellence and camaraderie,” Bibbs said. “His innovative teaching methods and his innate ability to inspire and motivate students have resulted in remarkable achievements both in and out of the classroom. Under his guidance, our Mighty Hurricane band has received numerous accolades, including top honors at regional competitions and performances that have captivated audiences far and wide.”

This year, the band program has shown exponential growth in its performance by obtaining first division at the SAISD Marching Showcase, first division at UIL Marching Competition (advancing to the Area competition), first division at the SAISD Concert and Sight-Reading contest, and first division at the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest, with two students advancing to the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest (TSSEC). They also won first place in Small Bands at the Battle of Flowers Parade and first place among local bands in the Fiesta Flambeau parade. 

While his list of accomplishments are lengthy, Bibbs says Adams’ greatest achievements are the relationships he builds with his students. 

“Mr. Adams has consistently demonstrated an unparalleled dedication to his students, a passion for music education, and an unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment,” she said. “He embodies the qualities of an outstanding teacher: passion, dedication, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of his students. His impact on our school community is immeasurable.”

Adams said the award, which he received at the AAABSE 9th Annual Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards and Student Scholarships Gala at St. Philip’s College, further affirms his commitment to the profession of teaching.

"I have a calling on my life to teach,” Adams said. “I take that very seriously. I know that I may be the only form of hope for many students. I can't mess that up. I need them to fulfill my destiny and they need me to shower them with love. It's a blessing to be acknowledged by the work that you love to do and share.”

Adams recorrió los pasos de sus estudiantes mientras participaba en la banda de música de Sam Houston en la década de 1980.

"Tras procesar las expectativas, rápidamente las transformé para mis estudiantes. Mis estudiantes no podían rendir si sus notas eran inferiores a 80. Mis estudiantes tenían que aprender a leer música a nivel universitario. De mis estudiantes se esperaba que fueran un ejemplo para los demás estudiantes de la clase". 

El reto funcionó. El programa de la Hurricane Band ha producido dos valedictorians, tres salutatorians, y más de 40 estudiantes top ten. Hasta la fecha, sus estudiantes han obtenido más de $500,000 en becas universitarias.
También ha puesto en contacto a sus estudiantes con su alma mater, Florida A&M, para que asistan a un campamento anual de verano de la banda en la HBCU, lo que les ha ayudado a desarrollar su estilo de marcha e interpretación propio de la zona. 

"El Sr. Adams ha transformado nuestro programa de banda en un próspero centro de excelencia musical y camaradería", dijo Bibbs. "Sus innovadores métodos de enseñanza y su capacidad innata para inspirar y motivar a los estudiantes han dado lugar a notables logros tanto dentro como fuera del salón de clases. Bajo su dirección, nuestra banda Mighty Hurricane ha recibido numerosos elogios, incluidos los máximos honores en competiciones regionales y actuaciones que han cautivado a públicos de todas partes."

Este año, el programa de la banda ha mostrado un crecimiento exponencial en su desempeño al obtener la primera división en el SAISD Marching Showcase, primera división en la UIL Marching Competition (avanzando a la competencia de Área), primera división en el SAISD Concert and Sight-Reading contest, y primera división en el UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest, con dos estudiantes avanzando al Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest (TSSEC). También obtuvieron el primer puesto en Bandas Pequeñas en el Desfile de la Batalla de Flores y el primer puesto entre las bandas locales en el desfile Fiesta Flambeau. 

Aunque su lista de logros es larga, Bibbs afirma que los mayores logros de Adams son las relaciones que establece con sus estudiantes. 

"El Sr. Adams ha demostrado sistemáticamente una dedicación sin parangón a sus estudiantes, una pasión por la educación musical y un compromiso inquebrantable con el fomento de un entorno de aprendizaje inclusivo y solidario", afirmó. "Encarna las cualidades de un maestro sobresaliente: pasión, dedicación y un auténtico deseo de marcar la diferencia en la vida de sus estudiantes. Su impacto en nuestra comunidad escolar es inconmensurable".

Adams dijo que el premio, que recibió en la 9ª Gala Anual de Premios al Profesor Destacado del Año y Becas Estudiantiles de la AAABSE en el St. Philip's College, reafirma aún más su compromiso con la profesión docente.
Tengo la vocación de enseñar", afirma Adams. Me lo tomo muy en serio. Sé que puedo ser la única forma de esperanza para muchos estudiantes. No puedo estropearlo. Los necesito para cumplir mi destino y ellos necesitan que les colme de amor. Es una bendición que te reconozcan por el trabajo que amas hacer y compartir.”
