Bella Anderson has always dabbled in art. 

 

"I've always had an interest in art because both of my parents have always been pretty creative," the Fox Tech High School senior said.  “I’ve been drawing since I was young. It is just something I found joy in.”

 

So when this year, she was able to combine that love of art with her passion for law in the Courtroom Artist portion of the Mock Trial Competition, Anderson said it brought her so much joy.

In her first appearance in the competition, Anderson emerged a state champion, and went on to represent Texas at the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Delaware earlier this month. 

 

“This was the first time that we have had a student from San Antonio win the state of Texas as our state champion and then move on to nationals so we are super excited about that,” teacher Jennifer Casanova said.

 

At the national event, Anderson was in a competition pool with 48 other students around the country. She placed fifth.

 

In the contest, students have from the onset of the opening statement to the closing statement to create an art piece that depicts what is happening in the courtroom. Normally, they get about 90 minutes to complete the piece. 

 

“While the competition is going on, I'm usually in the jury box or if there is an open space where the court reporter usually sits, so I can sit and just get a perspective of the courtroom and choose any action that is going on,” Anderson said.

 

She has an advantage because she has participated in the mock trial team at Fox Tech. 

 

“I have an image in my head of who I am going to draw and what they are going to be doing in that moment,” Anderson said. “It’s really just about following along and keeping an open ear to what’s going on in the case while drawing. So if I hear the third witness on the opposing counsel’s team is already finishing up their direct and cross, I know I have roughly 15 minutes left before they start their closing, and that’s when I know I have to hurry it up.”

 

Anderson likes to use alcohol markers with chalk pastels to add texture to the drawing. Her work also features colored pencils, a black outlining pen and a gel white marker to add shine details.

 

She enjoys drawing faces and features that make them unique – narrow noses or sculpted jawlines.

 

Planning to attend UTSA next year to study criminology, and hopefully art, Anderson credits the opportunities Fox Tech has given her with getting her to this point, fueling an interest in law that started with the 2020 election.

 

“I was talking to my mom about wanting to pursue law in the future and luckily Fox Tech was a magnet school that offered both health and law,” Anderson said. “I didn’t know about much of our government going in, but Ms. Casanova has opened a great path for me to know the system of government and the procedures of law.”

 

The opportunities she has had to merge the two things she loves has proven heartwarming, she said.

 

“I’ve always had an interest for law and the fact that I could implement my art into it as well was really fulfilling for me,” Anderson said. “It’s a mix of the two worlds which is really nice.”

Bella Anderson siempre ha tenido inquietudes artísticas. 

 

"Siempre me ha interesado el arte porque mis padres siempre han sido muy creativos", dice la alumna de último curso de Fox Tech High School.  "Dibujo desde que era joven. Es algo que me ha hecho feliz".

 

Así que cuando este año pudo combinar su amor por el arte con su pasión por el derecho en la sección de Artista de Tribunales del Concurso de Simulacros de Juicio, Anderson dijo que le produjo mucha alegría.

En su primera participación en la competición, Anderson se proclamó campeona estatal y pasó a representar a Texas en el National High School Mock Trial Championship celebrado en Delaware a principios de este mes. 

 

"Es la primera vez que un estudiante de San Antonio gana el campeonato estatal de Texas y pasa a los nacionales, así que estamos muy contentos", dijo la profesora Jennifer Casanova.

 

En el evento nacional, Anderson compitió con otros 48 estudiantes de todo el país. Quedó en quinto lugar.

 

En el concurso, los estudiantes tienen desde el comienzo del alegato inicial hasta el alegato final para crear una obra de arte que represente lo que está sucediendo en la sala del tribunal. Normalmente, disponen de unos 90 minutos para completar la obra. 

 

"Mientras se desarrolla la competición, suelo estar en el estrado del jurado o si hay un espacio abierto donde suele sentarse el taquígrafo del tribunal, de modo que puedo sentarme y tener una perspectiva de la sala y elegir cualquier acción que se esté desarrollando", dijo Anderson.

 

Tiene ventaja porque ha participado en el equipo de juicios simulados de Fox Tech. 

 

Tengo una imagen en la cabeza de quién voy a dibujar y qué va a hacer en ese momento", dice Anderson. "En realidad se trata de seguir la corriente y mantenerse atento a lo que ocurre en el caso mientras se dibuja. Así que si oigo que el tercer testigo del equipo del abogado contrario ya está terminando su alegato directo y cruzado, sé que me quedan aproximadamente 15 minutos antes de que empiecen su alegato final, y entonces es cuando sé que tengo que darme prisa."

 

A Anderson le gusta utilizar rotuladores de alcohol con pasteles de tiza para añadir textura al dibujo. En sus obras también utiliza lápices de colores, un rotulador de contorno negro y un rotulador blanco de gel para añadir detalles de brillo.

 

Le gusta dibujar rostros y rasgos que los hagan únicos: narices estrechas o mandíbulas esculpidas.

 

Planeando asistir a UTSA el próximo año para estudiar criminología y, con suerte, arte, Anderson atribuye a las oportunidades que Fox Tech le ha dado el haberla llevado hasta este punto, fomentando un interés en derecho que comenzó con las elecciones del 2020.

 

"Hablaba con mi madre de que quería estudiar derecho en el futuro y, por suerte, Fox Tech era una escuela magnet que ofrecía tanto salud como derecho", dijo Anderson. "Al entrar no sabía mucho de nuestro gobierno, pero la Sra. Casanova me ha abierto un gran camino para conocer el sistema de gobierno y los procedimientos de la ley".

 

Las oportunidades que ha tenido de combinar las dos cosas que ama han resultado reconfortantes, afirma.

 

"Siempre me ha interesado el Derecho, y el hecho de poder aplicarlo a mi arte me ha llenado de satisfacción", afirma Anderson. "Es una mezcla de los dos mundos que resulta verdaderamente interesante".
