A wall on the back side of Arnold Elementary is looking a lot brighter after the school's community came together with local artist Albert Gonzales to create a mural inspired by his Wabi Sabi Project. 

The project came to be after coach Alejandra Garza, who started the school's garden last year, suggested to art teacher Monique Valero that the wall in the background surrounding the boiler could be beautified to amplify the garden’s theme.

Valero said she immediately thought of Gonzales and his Wabi Sabi series. 

Gonzales, a 2009 Lanier High School graduate, has explained that the bold painted flowers in the Wabi Sabi series “embrace the beauty of the imperfect, or in simple terms, perfectly imperfect.” 

When Valero approached him with the project, he agreed to donate the design. The school only had to raise funds for the supplies for the project. 

The school raised money through selling snacks during the Solar Eclipse event and some students even took the lead on fundraising, with one fifth grade student, Soham Patel, so moved that he raised over half of the $2,000 needed for the project. In response, Gonzales created one flower – a lotus, specifically in Patel’s honor.

“This garden is a space where people can get together and not just for people but the animals as well,” Patel said. “I wanted to be a part of making that happen for our school being a part of this amazing creation. I feel like I accomplished something big in life I also feel very happy the artist included the lotus flower because it represents me and my nation.”

The first weekend in May, the campus got ready to work. Gonzales came out and primed the wall and placed the outlines of the floral design. The next morning, more than 100 students, plus families, teachers and staff came out to the Painting in the Garden Day to not only add the splashes of color, but enjoy fellowship with food, music and vendors. 

“I knew it was going to be great but to have so many families there, it was so impactful to know this is what our students and families made at Arnold that everyone can see,” Valero said. “It impacted the whole community to bring families together so they could have this memorable experience with their kids. You can see this is going to have a lasting impact on them.”

Una pared en la parte trasera de Arnold Elementary School luce mucho más brillante después de que la comunidad de la escuela aunara esfuerzos con el artista local Albert Gonzales para crear un mural inspirado en su Proyecto Wabi Sabi.

Gonzales, graduado de Lanier High School en 2009, explicó que las llamativas flores pintadas en la serie Wabi Sabi “abrazan la belleza de lo imperfecto o, en términos simples, perfectamente imperfecto”. 

Cuando Valero se le acercó con el proyecto, él aceptó donar el diseño. La escuela sólo tuvo que recaudar fondos para el material necesario para el proyecto. 

La escuela recaudó dinero mediante la venta de refrigerios durante el evento del eclipse solar y algunos estudiantes incluso tomaron la iniciativa en la recaudación de fondos, y un estudiante de quinto grado, Soham Patel, se emocionó tanto que recaudó más de la mitad de los $2000 necesarios para el proyecto. En respuesta, Gonzales creó una flor: un loto, específicamente en honor de Patel.

"Este jardín es un espacio donde la gente puede reunirse y no sólo para las personas sino también para los animales”, dijo Patel. “Quería ser parte de hacer que eso sucediera para que nuestra escuela fuera parte de esta increíble creación. Siento que logré algo grande en la vida. También me siento muy feliz de que el artista haya incluido la flor de loto porque me representa a mí y a mi nación”.

El primer fin de semana de mayo, el campus se preparó para trabajar. Gonzales salió, preparó la pared y colocó los contornos del diseño floral. A la mañana siguiente, más de 100 estudiantes, además de familias, maestros y personal asistieron al día de a pintar en el Jardín, no solo para agregar toques de color, sino también para disfrutar del compañerismo con comida, música y vendedores. 

"Sabía que iba a ser grandioso, pero tener tantas familias allí, fue muy impactante saber que esto es lo que nuestros estudiantes y familias hicieron en Arnold y que todos pueden ver", dijo Valero. “Reunir a las familias para que pudieran tener esta experiencia memorable con sus hijos impactó a toda la comunidad. Se puede ver que esto va a tener un impacto duradero en ellos".
