It is a bittersweet time of year for school districts across the nation. High school seniors say farewell to their classmates as they branch out into the world to pursue higher education, begin a career, or decide their next steps in life. Teachers pack up their classrooms and say their goodbyes for the summer. The end of the school year is especially poignant for the 15 San Antonio ISD schools that are closing their doors due to the SAISD board’s fall 2023 rightsizing decision.
“We are at a pivotal point in the history of SAISD, and the rightsizing decision was not made lightly,” Superintendent Jaime Aquino said in a letter after the board approved the final rightsizing package. “These shifts in our educational journey are not just about closing doors but opening new ones. The rightsizing study was driven by our long-term vision of enhancing the educational experience for all students.”
SAISD is not alone in having to downsize campus numbers. Edgewood ISD is closing two schools. South San Antonio ISD closed three schools at the end of last school year, and plans to close another this year. The Harlandale ISD board voted last year to close four of the district’s schools. Elsewhere in the state and nationwide, school districts face similar closures.
In an effort to document and honor SAISD’s closing campuses, members of the SAISD Communications rightsizing team have been documenting the closing and merging of campuses this spring, collecting photos, quotes, and interviews with affected students, staff, and community members. The collected information is expected to displayed in a virtual museum, which will contain digitized memorabilia from each of the closing or merging campuses.
Below are remembrances shared by some of the staff, students, and community members who are directly affected by the campus closures or mergers.
"...I am going to miss this building. It was a perfect building for the family that was in it. Every time you walk in, it is happy, it is bright. People love coming here, they ask if they can come hang out on the campus. People say, 'It's just a building.' But it is not just a building. I think people made a home here. People feel safe here and that’s what I love about it. But I love the people the most; the families and the community that have created with each other. "Estos cambios en nuestra trayectoria educativa no consisten sólo en cerrar puertas sino en abrir otras nuevas. El estudio de la optimización de planteles fue impulsado por nuestra visión a largo plazo de mejorar la experiencia educativa para todos los estudiantes."
SAISD no es el único que ha tenido que cerrar escuelas. Edgewood ISD va a cerrar dos escuelas. South San Antonio ISD cerró tres escuelas al final del año escolar pasado y planea cerrar otra este año. La Junta Directiva de Harlandale ISD votó el año pasado para cerrar cuatro de las escuelas del distrito. En otras partes del estado y de todo el país, los distritos escolares enfrentan cierres similares.
En un esfuerzo por documentar y honrar el cierre de los campus de SAISD, los miembros del equipo de la optimización de planteles del departamento de Comunicaciones de SAISD ha estado documentando el cierre y la fusión de los campus esta primavera, recopilando fotografías, citas y entrevistas con estudiantes, personal y miembros de la comunidad afectados. Se espera que la información recopilada se muestre en un museo virtual, que contendrá recuerdos digitalizados de cada uno de los campus que se cerrará o fusionará.
