For the past 22 years, Pre-K teacher Jill Ruiz has loved working at Pershing Elementary.

"It immediately felt like home. That's why I never left," said Ruiz.

Now the veteran teacher has at least 7,000 more reasons to love her job. And it could end up being 25,000 more.

“It’s a pretty big deal,” said Ruiz with a smile.

Ruiz is one of 286 SAISD teachers selected to receive bonus pay through the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA). Educators are designated as Recognized, Exemplary or Master teachers. As a Master teacher, Ruiz will receive a stipend between $7,000 and $25,100.

“Ms. Ruiz has that ‘little extra.’ She’s extraordinarily dedicated to her students, her families and the success of our school,” said Pershing Principal Shelene Livas said. “She makes school a great place to be a kid.”

The teachers received these new designations, or increases in their existing designations, as part of the district’s Master Teacher Initiative (MTI), which provides a framework to document their excellence in the following domains: Classroom Observations & Performance, Student Achievement, and Teacher Leadership & Collaboration.

“What’s really big is the confirmation that I’m a good teacher,” said Ruiz. “It’s reenergized me, and to be rewarded for all your hard work, that’s outstanding.”

“I think the TIA becomes a real source of pride for our teachers,” said Livas. 

SAISD is one of only 176 districts in the state to take part in the TIA. This year the program eligibility was expanded beyond STAAR-testing content areas. That means nearly every district teacher has a pathway to become designated, including special education and elective teachers. And Pre-K through 2nd grade teachers.

Just like Jill Ruiz.

"It is important because it is attractive to future teachers and retains current teachers,” Livas said. “This is a place where teachers are growing, learning and doing well, which means students are doing the same.”

“If you have it in your heart and you believe that you are a fantastic teacher, come join our district,” Ruiz said. “You will be well rewarded with more money and prestige. And it’s also going to help in the long run when you get that retirement check.”

"La Sra. Ruiz tiene ese 'pequeño extra'. Está extraordinariamente dedicada a sus estudiantes, a sus familias y al éxito de nuestra escuela", dijo la directora de Pershing, Shelene Livas. “Hace de la escuela un lugar estupendo para ser niño”.

Los maestros recibieron estas nuevas designaciones, o aumentos en sus designaciones existentes, como parte de la Iniciativa de Maestros “Máster” (MTI, por sus siglas en inglés) del distrito, que proporciona un marco para documentar su excelencia en los siguientes dominios: Observaciones y desempeño en el salón, rendimiento estudiantil y liderazgo y colaboración entre maestros.

"Lo realmente importante es la confirmación de que soy una buena maestra", dijo Ruiz. "Me ha devuelto la energía, y que te recompensen por tu arduo trabajo, es extraordinario".

"Creo que la asignación TIA se convierte en un verdadero motivo de orgullo para nuestros maestros", afirma Livas. 

SAISD es uno de los 176 distritos del estado que participan en la TIA. Este año la elegibilidad del programa se amplió más allá de las áreas de contenido de las pruebas STAAR. Eso significa que casi todos los maestros del distrito tienen una vía para ser designados, incluidos los de educación especial y los cursos electivos. Y maestros de preescolar a 2º de primaria. Igual que Jill Ruiz.

"Es importante porque resulta atractivo para los futuros maestros y retiene a los actuales", dijo Livas. "Este es un lugar donde los maestros crecen, aprenden y lo hacen bien, lo que significa que los estudiantes hacen lo mismo".

"Si lo lleva en el corazón y cree que es un maestro fantástico, venga a unirse a nuestro distrito", dijo Ruiz. "Será bien recompensado con más dinero y prestigio. Y también le ayudará a largo plazo cuando reciba el cheque de la jubilación".
