Sam Houston High School band director Bruce Adams used to watch Barry Manilow on television as a kid. Adams had no idea that his future teaching career would end up earning him an award from the famous singer and songwriter — an award that comes with $10,000 in grants.

But that is, indeed, what happened. The Manilow Music Project notified Adams that he was San Antonio’s winner of the Manilow Music Teacher Award.

The Manilow Music Project announced in the spring that in each city of Manilow’s summer tour, one lucky high school music teacher would be selected to receive grants from the philanthropic organization.

“I always want to do my part through The Manilow Music Project to keep music in schools,” Manilow said about the initiative. 

Up to 10 schools in each tour city could compete for the award and the winner was chosen by community vote.

“As the process moved along, it was a humbling experience to walk into the grocery store and community members would recognize me and say, ‘Hello Mr. Adams.  I am voting for you daily,’” Adams said. 

Adams was notified that he won on July 1. As the winner, Adams has earned $5,000 in new band instruments for the Sam Houston program and another $5,000 to be spent as he chooses. He also will get to attend Manilow’s concert on Aug. 15, where he will officially receive his award. 

It’s a bit of a full circle moment for Adams, who recently learned his college fraternity brother is Manilow’s drummer. 

“It will be exciting to connect with him on that day,” Adams said.

An alumnus of SAISD, Adams attended Gates and Hirsch Elementary Schools, Davis Middle School and graduated from Sam Houston High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Florida A&M University. He has now been teaching in SAISD for 27 years, 17 of those at Sam Houston.

After starting his teaching career at Herff and Carroll elementaries in the 90s, he moved to M.L. King Middle School for seven years before coming to Sam Houston.

Commonly recognized for his iconic marching band, Adams has formed strong relationships with students and the community that made this award possible, and the joy of winning so much sweeter. 

“Mr. Adams has consistently demonstrated an unparalleled dedication to his students, a passion for music education, and an unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment,” Sam Houston principal Dr. Nakeshia Bibbs said. “He embodies the qualities of an outstanding teacher: passion, dedication, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of his students. His impact on our school community is immeasurable.”

Excited about attending the concert, as Adams sings along to Manilow’s “Copacabana,” his favorite song from those early days, he also knows that the award the community voted for will bring opportunities for his students.

“I am grateful that my community and friends saw fit to keep up the voting fight until the end,” Adams said. “The monetary prize means that we can further the education of the students by purchasing items that the students may need.”

Spoken from the heart of this celebrated high school music teacher, there is no doubt that Manilow will be pleased. Adams and his students will keep the music alive at Sam Houston High School.

Cuando el director de la banda de Sam Houston, Bruce Adams, veía a Barry Manilow en la televisión cuando era niño, no tenía ni idea de que su futura carrera como maestro acabaría valiéndole un premio del famoso cantante y compositor, un premio que viene con $10,000 dólares en becas.

Efectivamente eso fue lo que ocurrió. El Manilow Music Project le notificó a Adams que él era el ganador del Manilow Music Teacher Award de San Antonio.

El Manilow Music Project anunció en la primavera que en cada ciudad de la gira de verano de Manilow se seleccionaría a un afortunado maestro de música de preparatoria para recibir becas de la organización filantrópica. 

“Siempre quiero aportar con mi granito de arena a través del Manilow Music Project para mantener la música en las escuelas”, dijo Manilow sobre la iniciativa.

Hasta 10 escuelas de cada ciudad podían competir por el premio y el ganador era elegido por votación de la comunidad. 

“A medida que avanzaba el proceso, era una humilde experiencia entrar en el supermercado y que los miembros de la comunidad me reconocieran y dijeran: 'Hola, Sr. Adams'.  Voto por usted diariamente,” dijo Adams. 

El 1 de julio, Adams recibió la notificación de que había ganado. Como ganador, Adams ha ganado $5,000 en nuevos instrumentos de banda para el programa de Sam Houston y otros $5,000 para gastar como él elija. También podrá asistir al concierto de Manilow el 15 de agosto, donde recibirá oficialmente su premio.  

Es un momento familiar para Adams, quien hace poco se enteró de que su hermano de la fraternidad universitaria es el baterista de Manilow.  

“Será emocionante conectar con él ese día”, dijo Adams.

Entusiasmado por asistir al concierto, mientras Adams canta “Copacabana”, su canción favorita de aquellos tiempos, también sabe que el premio por el que votó la comunidad traerá oportunidades para sus estudiantes. 

“Estoy agradecido de que mi comunidad y mis amigos hayan seguido votando hasta el final”, declaró Adams. “El premio monetario significa que podemos promover la educación de los estudiantes comprando artículos que los estudiantes puedan necesitar”. 

Este célebre maestro de música de preparatoria habla con el corazón, así que Manilow estará sin duda encantado. Adams y sus estudiantes mantendrán viva la música en Sam Houston High School.
