Growing up in San Antonio, Janet Hester remembers her mother taking her to the public library.
"I would get totally immersed in all the books," said Hester. "It's important to be a good reader just for yourself. For the inherent joy of reading."
Today that passion for reading is what Hester brings to work every day at SAISD. For the past five years, Hester has served as the district’s Director for Secondary Reading and Language Arts. The former English teacher has moved from helping students to supporting teachers in the mission to deliver the best student outcomes.
“I feel most connected with teachers,” said Hester. “We truly believe that every student comes to us with value. It’s up to us as educators to tap that value to empower students to be their best selves every day.”
Hester especially loves working with new teachers because they come with excitement. She feels it’s crucial that teachers are bold and innovative.
“The teachers that are coming up now are not afraid to try new things,” Hester said, while also referencing the superintendent’s talks about a growth mindset. “Mistakes are just a learning opportunity to grow from. We are never done. We are always learning.”
And learning together is what keeps the feeling of “home” and “familia” alive. She cares about the students. The staff. Most especially, the teachers she is charged with serving.
“The one-on-one interactions with teachers and the relationships that grow are my joy. We are going to figure this out, and together, we are going to make something beautiful,” said Hester.
“We have all the pieces in place. We have the curriculum. There are good people here. The work is the right work.”

Al director de lectura y artes del lenguaje le encanta inspirar a otros
Janet Hester recuerda que su madre la llevaba a la biblioteca pública, durante su juventud en San Antonio.
“Me metía por completo en todos los libros”, dijo Hester. “Es importante ser un buen lector para sí mismo. Por el placer innato de la lectura”.
Hoy en día, esa pasión por la lectura es lo que Hester aporta al trabajo todos los días en SAISD. Durante los últimos cinco años, Hester se ha desempeñado como directora de Lectura y Artes del Lenguaje Secundarios del distrito. La ex maestra de inglés ha pasado de ayudar a los estudiantes a apoyar a los maestros en la misión de ofrecer los mejores resultados a los estudiantes.
“Me siento más conectada con los maestros”, dijo Hester. “Realmente creemos que cada estudiante viene a nosotros con valor. Depende de nosotros, como educadores, aprovechar ese valor para fortalecer a los estudiantes para que sean lo mejor de sí mismos todos los días”.
A Hester le gusta especialmente trabajar con maestros nuevos porque vienen con ilusión. Considera que es fundamental que los maestros sean audaces e innovadores.
“Los nuevos maestros de ahora no tienen miedo de probar cosas nuevas”, dijo Hester, al tiempo que hizo referencia a las charlas del superintendente sobre una mentalidad de crecimiento. “Los errores son solo una oportunidad de aprendizaje para crecer. Nunca terminamos. Siempre estamos aprendiendo”.
Y aprender juntos es lo que mantiene vivo el sentimiento de “hogar” y “familia”. Se preocupa por los estudiantes. El personal. Muy especialmente, a los maestros a los que está encargada de servir.
“Las interacciones cara a cara con los maestros y las relaciones que se fortalecen me hacen feliz. Vamos a resolverlo y, juntos, vamos a crear algo hermoso”, dijo Hester.
“Tenemos todas las piezas en su lugar. Tenemos el plan de estudios. Aquí hay gente buena. Este trabajo es el trabajo correcto”.
