It’s been a whirlwind summer for St. Philip’s Early College High School student Bella Gonzalez. 

Gonzalez, who is entering 11th grade this year, came to St. Philip’s as a homeschooled student looking for the academic advancement an early college program offered. She had no idea how much more she would get. 
During her first year at the campus, her AVID teacher suggested an opportunity that would change her life: applying to the Voelcker Biomedical Research Academy, an intensive three-year biomedical research summer program through UT Health. 

Gonzalez went through a rigorous application process and was one of 21 students accepted into the cohort, along with four other SAISD students.  The program, she said, turned an introverted ninth grader, the youngest of six siblings, into a confident researcher and team player. Her intensive classes in year one of the Voelcker program, plus her dual credit and college-level courses at St. Philip’s Early College High School, prepared her for the research she began this summer, which is moving the needle forward on the study of malaria. A hallmark of the program is providing each student with a professional mentor at UT Health.

“The Voelcker Biomedical Research Academy is made possible through a unique partnership between the University of Texas Health Science Center, local high schools and a philanthropic organization, the Voelcker fund. The Academy strives to provide local students with mentored research experiences, coupled with leadership development, community service and a network of support for the scholars as the travel on the path into their futures”, Irene Chapa, Ph.D., director of the academy, stated.

Gonzalez said she has loved the program and is so glad she was encouraged to apply.

“I have loved every second of being in my lab and getting to begin my research,” Gonzalez said. “I have been blessed with mentors who are highly involved with me and the other Voelcker students in my lab.”

An aspiring veterinarian, Gonzalez hopes to ultimately study at Texas A&M University in College Station, but the experiences she is gaining through the program her teacher suggested are opening her eyes to just how big the biomedical field is.

“Getting accepted into VBRA painted the path of my other academic opportunities,” Gonzalez said. “Taking the chance and not knowing where it might get you could lead you to the greatest opportunities of a lifetime. I was a really shy girl before any of these experiences, but looking back I have realized that not only have I grown, I have done things that I would have never dreamed of.”

Reflecting on the big move to public school, Gonzalez said it made all the difference in the path to her dreams of medicine.

“If I didn’t come here, I would have never known about that program,” she said.

Ha sido un verano vertiginoso para Bella González, estudiante del St. Philip's Early College High School.  
González, que ingresa en 11º grado este año, llegó a St. Philip's como una estudiante educada en casa que buscaba el avance académico que ofrecía un programa de estudios universitarios tempranos. No tenía ni idea de cuánto más obtendría.  

Durante su primer año en el campus, su maestra de AVID le sugirió una oportunidad que cambiaría su vida: solicitar su ingreso en Voelcker Biomedical Research Academy, un programa intensivo de verano de investigación biomédica de tres años de duración a través de UT Health.

 
González pasó por un riguroso proceso de solicitud y fue uno de los 21 estudiantes aceptados en la cohorte, junto con otros cuatro estudiantes de SAISD.  Dijo que el programa convirtió a una introvertida estudiante de noveno grado, la menor de seis hermanos, en una investigadora segura de sí misma y en una persona capaz de colaborar con los demás. Las intensivas clases que recibió en el primer año del programa Voelcker, junto con los cursos de doble crédito y de nivel universitario que recibió en el St. Philip's Early College High School, la prepararon para la investigación que inició este verano y que está impulsando el estudio de la malaria. Una característica distintiva del programa es que proporciona a cada estudiante un mentor profesional en UT Health.

 
"Este proyecto es posible gracias a una asociación única entre el Centro de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad de Texas, los institutos locales y una organización filantrópica, el fondo Voelcker. El objetivo de la Academia es proporcionar a los estudiantes locales experiencias de investigación tuteladas, junto con el desarrollo del liderazgo, el servicio a la comunidad y una red de apoyo a los estudiantes en su trayectoria hacia el futuro", declaró Irene Chapa, Ph.D., directora de la Academia.

 
González dijo que le ha encantado el programa y que está muy contenta de que la animaran a solicitarlo.

 
“Me ha encantado cada segundo que he pasado en mi laboratorio y empezar mi investigación,” dijo González. “He sido afortunada de contar con mentores muy interesados en mi trabajo y en el de los demás estudiantes de Voelcker en mi laboratorio.”

Aspirante a veterinaria, González espera acabar estudiando en la Universidad A&M de Texas, en College Station, pero las experiencias que está adquiriendo a través del programa que le propuso su maestra le están abriendo los ojos a lo grande que es el campo de la biomedicina. 

“Ser admitida en la VBRA marcó el camino de mis otras oportunidades académicas”, dijo González. “Aprovechar la oportunidad y no saber a dónde te puede llevar puede conducirte a las mayores oportunidades de tu vida. Yo era una chica muy tímida antes de cualquiera de estas experiencias, sin embargo, con la perspectiva del tiempo me he dado cuenta de que no sólo he crecido, sino que he hecho cosas que nunca habría soñado.”

Reflexionando sobre el gran cambio a la escuela pública, González dijo que marcó toda la diferencia en el camino hacia sus sueños de medicina. 

“Si no hubiera acudido aquí, nunca habría conocido este programa”, afirma.
