A lot can change in five years. But one thing that hasn't is the administrative team at Will Rogers Academy.

Principal Zada Fowler and assistant principals Abel Hernandez and Jesus Solis all started at the campus in 2019-2020, the year that COVID-19 would ultimately upend, and have remained at the Pre-K through eighth grade academy the whole time.

“We get to see the little ones grow up to be young men and women,” Solis said. “Our first grade babies when we arrived are now sixth graders. To witness that type of growth is so wonderful.”

The three administrators, who refer to themselves as the “A-Team,” all came to the position with different backgrounds and areas of expertise. 

Fowler has been in education for 27 years and administration for 18 of them. Hernandez has been in education nearly 30 years, 23 of them as a bilingual educator before coming to Will Rogers. Solis has been employed in education for nine years but has lived in the environment his whole life. 

“Growing up with a mother as a lifelong administrator, I have always known I wanted to be an administrator,” he said. “Seeing my mother and the mountains she could move was amazing for me to witness. It was no surprise that I would attempt to follow in her footsteps.”

For all three arriving in 2019-2020, the atmosphere of Will Rogers immediately drew them in. 

“This campus is truly a familia,” Fowler said. “The ties and comradery of the staff and families is unlike anywhere else that I have ever been. The families and community partners are all about the children. Whatever it takes to ensure they are taken care of and successful, the community makes it happen.”

The atmosphere of an academy also allows for plenty of opportunities for parents and the community to plug in.
“Will Rogers is a very active campus,” Hernandez said. “Since we have 10 grade levels there are a lot of student activities and community events that help bring a family atmosphere.”

Working together for five years, they’ve brought a stability and routine to the campus that allows them to serve students well. 

“We know each other so well and our roles are established in such a way that systems and routines run like clockwork,” Fowler said. “In addition, we are able to have crucial conversations and push each other's thinking and ideas without fear of offending each other.  We all know that we are here to make things the best they can be and that means consistently changing and pushing to go from good to great.”

Hernandez agrees.

“Growing together and using each other's strengths has allowed us to continue to keep the strong bond,” Hernandez said. “The biggest benefit of having a stable leadership is that we are able to build and improve on the good things that were previously done.”

En cinco años pueden cambiar muchas cosas. Pero algo que no ha cambiado es el equipo administrativo de Will Rogers Academy.

La directora Zada Fowler y los subdirectores Abel Hernández y Jesús Solís comenzaron en el campus en 2019-2020, el año en el que el COVID-19 cambiaria todo, y han permanecido en la academia de preescolar a octavo grado todo el tiempo.

“Vemos a los más pequeños crecer y convertirse en jóvenes”, afirma Solís. "Nuestros bebés de primer grado cuando llegamos son ahora estudiantes de sexto grado. Ser testigo de ese tipo de crecimiento es maravilloso".
Los tres administradores, que se autodenominan el "El Equipo A", llegaron al puesto con diferentes trayectorias y áreas de experiencia. 

Fowler lleva 27 años en la enseñanza y 18 en la administración. Hernández lleva casi 30 años en la educación, 23 de ellos como educadora bilingüe antes de llegar a Will Rogers. Solís trabaja en el sector educativo desde hace nueve años, pero ha vivido en este entorno toda su vida. 

"Como mi madre fue administradora toda la vida, siempre supe que quería ser administrador", afirma. "Ver a mi madre y cómo podía mover montañas fue algo increíble para mí. No me sorprendió que intentara seguir sus pasos".

Para los tres que llegaron en 2019-2020, el ambiente de Will Rogers les atrajo de inmediato. 

"Este campus es realmente una familia", dijo Fowler. "Los lazos y la camaradería del personal y las familias no se parecen a los de ningún otro lugar en el que haya estado. Las familias y los socios comunitarios se preocupan por los niños. La comunidad hace lo que sea necesario para garantizar su cuidado y su éxito".

El ambiente de una academia también ofrece a los padres y a la comunidad muchas oportunidades de participar.

"Will Rogers es un campus muy activo", dijo Hernández. "Como tenemos 10 niveles de grado, hay muchas actividades estudiantiles y eventos comunitarios que ayudan a crear un ambiente familiar".

 Trabajando juntos desde hace cinco años, han aportado al campus una estabilidad y una rutina que les permite atender bien a los estudiantes.

"Nos conocemos tan bien y nuestras funciones están establecidas de tal manera que los sistemas y las rutinas funcionan como un reloj", afirma Fowler. "Además, podemos conversar cruciales e impulsarnos mutuamente a pensar e idear sin miedo a ofendernos.  Todos sabemos que estamos aquí para hacer las cosas lo mejor posible y eso significa cambiar constantemente y empujar para pasar de lo bueno a lo genial".

Hernández está de acuerdo.

Hernández afirma que maduran juntos y aprovechar lo más destacado nos ha permitido mantener el vínculo que nos une. “La mayor ventaja de tener un liderazgo estable es que podemos construir y mejorar sobre las cosas buenas que se hicieron anteriormente”.
