One of the joys in blending campuses this year is creating new traditions. Dr. Stephanie Ratliff wasted no time. The veteran principal moved, with many of the staff and students, from Douglass to Herff elementary this year, and she was ready to move a much-loved tradition with her: the home visits.
“I started the home visits as a way for families, students included, to see and know I am there for them. I am going to always be there, judgement-free, for them and our kids,” Ratliff said. “I really just wanted the families to get to know me and I wanted to get to know them where they are the most comfortable. I didn't want families to feel like the only place they would see me was at school.”
Ratliff spent nine years as principal of Douglass. Each year at the end of summer, she and a team would visit all the families whose children were registered for the coming year. Over the years there, she went from visiting over 450 students to just over 150. When the school closed due to rightsizing in May, she said she knew just what she needed to do.
“I knew when I got to Herff that I would do home visits,” Ratliff said. “I wanted to continue to set the stage of ‘I am here for you.’”
The last two weeks of July, Ratliff and four others set aside a couple of hours each day to visit the children registered for the 2024-2025 year. Two staff members – Stella Tijerina and Laura Servin – had previously made visits with her at Douglass. Two other team members – assistant principal Rosa Threeton and instructional coach Tracy Gutierrez – had previously been at Herff and joined in for the first time. The group visited 456 students.
“It was a positive way to start the school year, especially after the changes that occurred due to the rightsizing,” Gutierrez said. “It allowed me to meet the families and get to know them better. The best part was seeing the smiling faces of the children and family members as we were visiting in a non-invasive way just popping in to say, ‘welcome’ or ‘welcome back.’”
Families received flyers about school supplies (but not a list, Ratliff cautions - they hustled for donations, so parents didn't have to worry about buying them), a family calendar, books, candy, and a squishy. Most of all, though, they received faces and names who could help their children on their educational journeys this year.
“The interactions were positive and many of the families were so surprised because this had not been done at Herff in prior years,” Gutierrez said. “I cannot wait to do the home visits again as I know that so many families will be welcoming us.”

No quería que las familias sintieran que el único lugar donde me verían sería en la escuela”.

"Fue una forma positiva de empezar el año escolar, especialmente después de los cambios que se produjeron debido a la optimización de planteles", dijo Gutiérrez. "Me permitió reunirme con las familias y conocerlas mejor. Lo mejor de todo fue ver las caras sonrientes de los niños y sus familiares mientras los visitábamos de forma no invasiva, simplemente asomándonos para decirles 'bienvenidos' o 'bienvenidos de nuevo'".
Las familias recibieron folletos sobre material escolar (pero no una lista, advierte Ratliff - se apresuraron a conseguir donaciones, para que los padres no tuvieran que preocuparse de comprarlo), un calendario familiar, libros, caramelos y un juguete. Pero, sobre todo, recibieron caras y nombres que podrían ayudar a sus hijos en su trayectoria educativa este año.
"Las interacciones fueron positivas y muchas de las familias estaban muy sorprendidas porque esto no se había hecho en Herff en años anteriores", dijo Gutiérrez. "Estoy impaciente por volver a hacer las visitas a domicilio, pues sé que muchas familias nos darán la bienvenida".
