It's not unusual for students to feel shy with new classmates at the beginning of the school year. But Maverick Elementary School Counselor Jeanette Zuniga and her puppets have a fun and identifiable way to help students deal with new situations.

 

“Dolly is very shy, and she speaks very softly,” Zuniga said. “Once she gets to know you, she will open up to you.”

 

Zuniga knows some of the students might be feeling the same way. Dolly is joined by four friends who help Zuniga teach important social-emotional learning (SEL) lessons and help illustrate the pillars of character in the district's guidance curriculum.

 

“Everybody loves Roberto the rooster,” Zuniga said. “He is wild and very funny. He loves waking up our school neighbors at 4 a.m. - at least that’s what he says. Dolly takes care of him because his previous owners did not take good care of him.”

 

Then there is Nicole. She is the mischievous one, Zuniga explained. Pedro is known for being nice. If anyone needs a friend, Pedro is the one you can count on. He loves to help others, follows the rules, and loves coming to school. Pedro did help one new puppet, Tiana, get acquainted last year.

 

“Tiana was new to us last year,” Zuniga said. “She came from New York. She loves Maverick because in her past school, kids were being mean to her.”

 

"They all bring something special to my guidance lessons,” she added. “They are very well known, and the kids absolutely love them.”

No es inusual que los estudiantes se sientan tímidos con los nuevos compañeros al principio del año escolar. Pero la consejera de Maverick Elementary School, Jeanette Zuniga, y sus marionetas tienen una forma divertida e identificable de ayudar a los estudiantes a enfrentarse a situaciones nuevas.

 

"Dolly es muy tímida y habla muy quedito", dice Zuniga. "En cuanto te conozca, empezará a sentirse a gusto contigo".

 

Zuniga sabe que algunos de los estudiantes pueden estar sintiendo lo mismo. A Dolly se le unen cuatro amigos que ayudan a Zúñiga a impartir importantes lecciones socioemocionales y a ilustrar los pilares del carácter en el plan de estudios de orientación del distrito.

 

"Todo el mundo quiere al gallo Roberto", dice Zúñiga. "Es salvaje y muy divertido. Le encanta despertar a nuestros vecinos de la escuela a las 4 de la mañana, al menos eso dice. Dolly cuida de él porque sus dueños anteriores no lo cuidaron bien".

 

Luego está Nicole. Ella es la traviesa, explicó Zúñiga. Pedro tiene fama de simpático. Si alguien necesita un amigo, puede contar con Pedro. Le encanta ayudar a los demás, sigue las normas y le encanta venir a la escuela. Pedro ayudó a una nueva marioneta, Tiana, a familiarizarse el año pasado.

 

"Tiana era nueva para nosotros el año pasado", dijo Zúñiga. "Vino de Nueva York. Le encanta Maverick porque en su escuela anterior los niños no eran muy buenos con ella".

 

"Todos aportan algo especial a mis clases de orientación, añade. "Son muy conocidos y a los niños les encantan".
