When Nikki Martinez walks down the hallways of Ogden Elementary with her principal cart, she occasionally hears a "Hi Mama!"

As both principal and parent to three of her own children at Ogden, she doesn’t miss a beat.

“It’s really easy because I tell everybody I love them,” Martinez said. “So I tell all the kids ‘I love you, I love you.’ It’s very natural.”

The veteran principal is in her 19th year in education, and the last 10 of those have been at Ogden, where her children all attend. Jason is in fifth grade. Xiomara is in second, and Ariela is in kindergarten.

“All of my kids have literally grown up within these walls,” Martinez said. “That’s what also makes it personal. It is very integrated into my family – it is both work and home at the same time.”

As a child, Martinez went to school and visited her grandparents just blocks from where Ogden sits. After she studied at Our Lady of the Lake University, she served as a student teacher at Smith Elementary. 

 
“SAISD is so rich in culture and community that it made sense to come back to the inner city and really work alongside the community to help kids achieve,” she said.  

 
As she moved into leadership, Martinez said the relationships she develops with students and their families are grounded in community and are part of what she loves most about Ogden.

“I know families," she said. “We have generations go through and parents are comfortable talking to me. We have stories, we have history, and so really, we are building that community, that love and that family together to build what the school is.”

That community is also built through activities including their annual Trunk-or-Treat and Fiesta Parade, where students can see the support of their community, parents, volunteers and district staff.

“It is important for the kids to see that those people are not coming out to support me. They are coming out for the kids,” Martinez said. “We want to make sure our students know that everybody loves you, that we care about you, and we all want what’s best for you.” 

She admits that in being a servant leader on a campus, there are a lot of activities to balance.  For that reason, she’s glad to have her children there, and that several of the teachers there have made the same choice. 

“In these positions we work so much, but I get to bring them to work and take them home and check in on them to see how they are doing. It’s how I balance being a mom and being a principal at the same time. It also helps as a pulse check on decisions. What you want as a mom is what you want for all your kids in the school.”

La directora de Ogden lleva a su familia al trabajo diariamente

Cuando Nikki Martínez camina por los pasillos de Ogden Elementary con su carrito de directora, de vez en cuando oye un "¡Hola, mamá!".

Como directora y madre de tres de sus propios hijos en Ogden, no se le escapa nada.

"Es muy fácil porque les digo a todos que los quiero", dice Martínez. "Así que les digo a todos los niños: 'Te quiero, te quiero'. Es muy natural."

La veterana directora lleva 19 años en el mundo de la educación, y los últimos 10 los ha pasado en Ogden, donde estudian todos sus hijos. Jason está en quinto grado. Xiomara está en segundo y Ariela en Kínder.

"Todos mis hijos han crecido literalmente entre estas paredes", dijo Martínez. "Eso es lo que también lo hace personal. Está muy integrada en mi familia: es trabajo y hogar al mismo tiempo".

De niña, Martínez iba a la escuela y visitaba a sus abuelos a pocas cuadras de donde se encuentra Ogden. Después de estudiar en la Universidad Our Lady of the Lake, trabajó como maestra estudiante en la Smith Elementary. 

 
"SAISD tiene tanta riqueza cultural y comunitaria que tenía sentido volver al centro de la ciudad y trabajar realmente junto a la comunidad para ayudar a los niños a alcanzar sus objetivos", dijo.  

 
A medida que avanzaba en el liderazgo, Martínez dijo que las relaciones que desarrolla con los estudiantes y sus familias se basan en la comunidad y son parte de lo que más le gusta de Ogden.

 
"Conozco a las familias", dijo. "Tenemos generaciones que pasan y los padres se sienten a gusto hablando conmigo. Tenemos historias, tenemos historial, y por eso estamos construyendo juntos esa comunidad, ese amor y esa familia para construir lo que es la escuela."

 
Esa comunidad también se construye a través de actividades como su Trunk-or-Treat anual y el Desfile deFiesta, donde los estudiantes pueden ver el apoyo de su comunidad, padres, voluntarios y personal del distrito.

 
"Es importante que los chicos vean que esas personas no vienen a apoyarme.  Vienen por los niños", dijo Martínez. "Queremos asegurarnos de que nuestros estudiantes sepan que todo el mundo los quiere, que nos preocupamos por ellos y que todos queremos lo mejor para ellos". 

 
Admite que para ser una líder servicial en un campus hay que equilibrar muchas actividades.  Por eso, se alegra de tener allí a sus hijos, y de que varios de los maestros del centro hayan tomado la misma decisión. 

 
"En estos puestos trabajamos mucho, pero tengo la oportunidad de traerlos al trabajo y llevarlos a casa y comprobar cómo les va. Así es como compagino ser madre y directora al mismo tiempo. También ayuda a tomar el pulso a las decisiones. Lo que quieres como madre es lo que quieres para todos tus hijos en la escuela".
