Lisa Jones didn't set out originally to be a teacher. Inspired by her high school science and math teachers, she developed a passion for STEM and pursued a career in electrical engineering. 

She worked in industry for seven years, where she made a discovery that changed her path.

“I was the only female and the only Black engineer in both companies I worked for,” Jones said. “Driven by a desire to make a difference, particularly in diversifying the technical field, I transitioned into teaching.”

Now 18 years later, Jones is an accomplished teacher of computer science, networking and cybersecurity at CAST Tech High School. 

“As an educator, my focus has been on connecting with my students and instilling in them the belief that they can achieve anything through dedication and believing in themselves,” Jones said. 

It’s working.

“Many of my former students have informed me that they pursued careers in engineering, teaching, programming, or cybersecurity because of my influence,” she said.

Jones, one of the district’s Distinguished Teachers of the year for 2023-2024, has also now received the KENS-5 EXCEL Award for San Antonio ISD.

She was presented with the award, an apple trophy and a $2,000 grant from Credit Human, at a classroom ceremony Sept. 24. But Jones said the greatest part of the award was allowing her to shine the spotlight on her students’ work, and they have been busy.

She has helped her students gain mentors in the field and real-life experiences. They have toured SAISD Networking/IT Department and have served on the student tech team for device repairs in SAISD, and for several years have been honored for having the highest passage rate for the CompTIA ITF+ certification. 

They have also competed in various events including CyberPatriots, Cyber esports (Cyber Warrior), Cyber Threat Defender, and CyberStart America. 

“I was both surprised and deeply honored to receive the KENS 5 Excel Award. It means a great deal to me that the hard work of my students, particularly those who may not typically compete, was recognized by KENS 5,” Jones said. "This opportunity allowed more of my students to be acknowledged, which brings me great joy. I’m truly grateful that my efforts have been recognized, and I am honored that KENS 5 is helping to share the achievements of my cybersecurity students with a wider audience.”

For Jones, the future cybersecurity professionals she teaches daily bring her joy just by their passion for learning in the important field. 

“My rewards in teaching are seeing the smile on my students face when they get a concept, sharing the joy they express when they are excited to learn, and the appreciation they demonstrate for my influence in directing their career path,” she said.

Maestra de CAST Tech gana el premio KENS-5 EXCEL

El plan original de Lisa Jones no era ser maestra. Inspirada por sus maestros de ciencias y matemáticas de preparatoria, fomentó una pasión por STEM y estudió ingeniería eléctrica. 

Trabajó siete años en la industria, donde hizo un descubrimiento que cambió su camino.

"Fui la única mujer e ingeniera afroamericana en las dos empresas para las que trabajé", comentó Jones. "Impulsada por el deseo de marcar la diferencia, sobre todo en la diversificación del campo técnico, cambié a la enseñanza".

Ahora, 18 años después, Jones es una maestra experta en ciencias de computación, redes y ciberseguridad en la preparatoria CAST Tech. 

"Como educadora, me he centrado en conectar con mis estudiantes e inculcarles la creencia de que pueden conseguir cualquier cosa con dedicación y creyendo en sí mismos", expresó Jones. 

Está funcionando.

"Muchos de mis antiguos estudiantes me han informado de que estudiaron carreras de ingeniería, enseñanza, programación o ciberseguridad gracias a mi influencia", comentó.

Jones, una de las Maestras Distinguidas del Año del distrito para 2023-2024, ahora ha recibido el Premio EXCEL de KENS-5 para San Antonio ISD.

Le fue entregado el premio, un trofeo en forma de manzana y una subvención de 2,000 dólares de Credit Human, en una ceremonia celebrada en un  salón el 24 de septiembre. Pero Jones dijo que lo mejor del premio era que le permitía destacar el trabajo de sus estudiantes, quienes han estado muy ocupados.

La maestra ha ayudado a sus alumnos a conseguir mentores en el campo y experiencias reales. Han visitado el departamento de Networking y IT de SAISD y han formado parte del equipo técnico estudiantil para la reparación de dispositivos en SAISD, y durante varios años han sido galardonados por tener la tasa de aprobados más alta en la certificación de CompTIA ITF+.

También han competido en diversos eventos, como CyberPatriots, ciberdeportes (Cyber Warrior) Cyber Threat Defender y CyberStart America. 

"Me ha sorprendido y honrado profundamente recibir el Premio Excel de KENS 5. Significa mucho para mí que el arduo trabajo de mis estudiantes, especialmente de aquellos que no suelen competir, haya sido reconocido por KENS 5", expresó Jones. "Esta oportunidad ha permitido que más de mis estudiantes sean reconocidos, lo cual me llena de alegría. Estoy realmente agradecida de que mis esfuerzos hayan sido reconocidos y me siento honrada de que KENS 5 este ayudando a compartir los logros de mis estudiantes de ciberseguridad a una mayor audiencia".

Para Jones, los futuros profesionistas de la ciberseguridad a los que enseña a diario le alegran solo con su pasión por aprender en este importante campo. 

“Mis recompensas en la enseñanza son ver la sonrisa en la cara de mis estudiantes cuando entienden un concepto, compartir la alegría que expresan cuando están entusiasmados por aprender y el agradecimiento que demuestran por mi influencia en la orientación de su carrera profesional", comentó.
