There’s a new engineering team at Ogden Elementary this year. About a dozen committed third, fourth and fifth graders, led by third grade teacher Ralph Gomez, are using STEM to have a lot of fun while they master skills students normally encounter in middle school or high school. 

The group gathers Mondays and Wednesdays after school. They are currently building and programming competition robots using Lego robotics kits. Before the year is out, they will also build rockets and solar cars, thanks to a grant from the SAISD Foundation.

The conversations students have belie their grade level. They talk about time, angles, rotations, and percents as they gather in small groups to program their robots ahead of competition. It’s vocabulary Gomez has begun to see spill over into the classroom, and it is preparing his young engineers for Career and Technical Education classes in middle school and high school.

They are having fun while they practice critical thinking skills.

“I really like it,” Nathan, a third grader, said. “I never played with motors or programming, just regular Legos. I use my brain first. It’s like imagination when you draw. You need to think until you know what to draw.”

Gomez, a Lanier High School alumnus who also attended Rhodes Middle School and Carvajal Elementary, sees a lot of himself in the budding engineers. 

“I am him,” he said, pointing to one of the students working on a robot. “I hope to instill the same passion in the next generation.”

The students will put their robots to the test at a competition Nov. 2 at Shepherd of the Hills school. 

El club de ingeniería estimula a los estudiantes con STEM


Este año hay un nuevo equipo de ingeniería en la escuela primaria Ogden. Alrededor de una docena de alumnos comprometidos de tercero, cuarto y quinto año, dirigidos por el maestro de tercero Ralph Gomez, utilizan STEM para divertirse a lo grande mientras dominan habilidades que los alumnos suelen adquirir en secundaria o preparatoria. 

El grupo se reúne los lunes y los miércoles después de escuela. Actualmente construyen y programan robots de competencia utilizando kits de robótica de Lego. Antes de que acabe el año, también construirán cohetes y autos solares, gracias a una subvención de la Fundación de SAISD.

Las conversaciones que los alumnos tienen no parecen de su grado escolar. Hablan de tiempo, ángulos, rotaciones y porcentajes mientras se reúnen en pequeños grupos para programar sus robots antes de la competencia. Es un vocabulario que Gomez ha visto esparcirse en el salón de clases, y que está preparando a sus jóvenes ingenieros para las clases de Educación Profesional y Técnica de secundaria y preparatoria.

Se divierten a la vez que practican el pensamiento crítico.

"Me gusta mucho", dijo Nathan, alumno de tercero. "Nunca había jugado con motores ni con programación, solo con Legos normales. Primero uso mi cerebro. Es como la imaginación cuando dibujas. Tienes que pensar hasta saber qué dibujar".

Gómez, exalumno de la escuela preparatoria Lanier, que también asistió a la escuela secundaria Rhodes y a la escuela primaria Carvajal, ve mucho de sí mismo en estos ingenieros en desarrollo. 

"Yo soy él", dijo, señalando a uno de los alumnos que trabajaba en un robot. "Espero inculcar la misma pasión a la próxima generación".

Los alumnos pondrán a prueba sus robots en una competencia el 2 de noviembre en la escuela Shepherd of the Hills.
