Third grade teacher Ralph Gomez is passionate about STEM education, and he brings a love for robotics to the Engineering Club at Ogden Elementary. Each Monday and Wednesday after school, he guides about a dozen committed third, fourth and fifth grade “engineers” in mastering skills in building and programming Lego robotic kits.
While also having a lot of fun, the young engineers earned second place at a competition Nov. 2, using skills traditionally not encountered until middle or high school. Gomez beams with pride at the students, many of whom remind him of himself.
“I am him,” he said, pointing to one of the students working on a robot. “I hope to instill the same passion in the next generation.”
The group will also build rockets and solar cars, two of Gomez’s other passions, thanks to a grant from the SAISD Foundation.
“Without the Foundation’s mini grant, none of this would be possible,” Gomez said. “They really do make dreams come true — I know it sounds cliché, but that's exactly how I feel.”
The club, which just started this fall, has already made big changes for the students. The conversations they are having belie their grade level, he said. They talk about time, angles, rotations, and percents as they gathered in small groups to program their robots ahead of competition. It’s vocabulary Gomez has begun to see spill over into the classroom, and it’s preparing his young engineers for Career and Technical Education classes in middle school and high school.
Gomez said that quick success is a product of both committed students and a supportive administration. Having a supportive principal, he notes, has made all the difference in starting out a new STEM program.
“Compared to the other districts that I have worked for, this one is the best,” he said. “Each school is different, but I do feel that we are treated like ‘family’ here at SAISD. This is home, where I'll retire.”

Ralph Gómez, maestro de tercer grado, es un apasionado de la educación STEM, y aporta su amor por la robótica al Club de Ingeniería de Ogden Elementary. Todos los lunes y miércoles, después de las clases, guía a una docena de "ingenieros" de tercero, cuarto y quinto de primaria para que aprendan a construir y programar kits robóticos de Lego.
Al tiempo que se divertían, los jóvenes ingenieros obtuvieron el segundo lugar en una competición celebrada el 2 de noviembre, en la que utilizaron destrezas que tradicionalmente no se adquieren hasta la enseñanza secundaria o preparatoria. Gómez se muestra orgulloso de los estudiantes, muchos de los cuales le recuerdan a él mismo.
"Yo soy él", dijo, señalando a uno de los alumnos que trabajaba en un robot. "Espero inculcar la misma pasión a la próxima generación".
El grupo también construirá cohetes y coches solares, otras dos de las pasiones de Gomez, gracias a una subvención de la Fundación SAISD.
"Sin la pequeña subvención de la Fundación, nada de esto sería posible", afirmó Gómez. "Realmente hacen los sueños realidad, sé que suena a cliché, pero es exactamente lo que siento".
El club, que acaba de empezar este otoño, ya ha hecho grandes cambios para los alumnos. Las conversaciones que los alumnos tienen no parecen de su grado escolar. Hablan de tiempo, ángulos, rotaciones y porcentajes mientras se reúnen en pequeños grupos para programar sus robots antes de la competencia. Es un vocabulario que Gomez ha visto esparcirse en el salón de clases, y que está preparando a sus jóvenes ingenieros para las clases de Educación Profesional y Técnica de secundaria y preparatoria.
Gomez afirmó que el rápido éxito es producto tanto del compromiso de los alumnos como del apoyo de la administración. Contar con una directora que me apoye, señala, ha marcado la diferencia a la hora de poner en marcha un nuevo programa STEM.
"En comparación con otros distritos en los que he trabajado, éste es el mejor", afirmó. "Cada escuela es diferente, pero siento que somos tratados como 'familia' aquí en SAISD. Este es mi hogar, en donde me jubilaré."
