Members of the San Antonio ISD Familia celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the city's 38th annual march and celebration on Jan. 20. The route began at M.L. King Academy, and participants marched in unity to Pittman Sullivan Park.

  
More than 75 students and faculty from various schools, district staff, and members of the board of trustees attended the three-mile march for peace, justice, and equality.

 
Some of the schools participating in the march included M.L. King Academy, Sam Houston High School, Jefferson High School, and LOTC programs from Longfellow Middle School, Tafolla Middle School, Mission Academy and the Young Men’s Leadership Academy.

 
Lt. Col. (retired) Artie Williams, LOTC instructor at Longfellow, says the march ties into ongoing curriculum on civics. His classes compare the United States constitution to others around the world, learn about non-violent activists like Nelson Mandela and participate in the both the MLK March and Cesar Chavez March.

 
"This year's march is important to me to ensure that none of us get lazy or too comfortable in the freedoms we have while in a relatively prosperous time in American history,” Williams said. “Those that came before us opened the door and we must continue to ensure our current and next generation enjoy and protect these freedoms and ensure all Americans have them and even more.”

The district’s participation in the march was organized by the Department of Family and Community Engagement and schools received transportation to the event through the SAISD Foundation.

“We are eternally grateful to be able to get out here,” retired Major Howard Huff, LOTC instructor at Mission Academy and YMLA said. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for students to see this firsthand and support something larger than themselves. It's very important to not only learn about what Dr. King has done and some of the things he said in speeches, but also to come out here and see his impact and what it means to the city and what it means to Americans overall.”

El teniente coronel (jubilado) Artie Williams, instructor de LOTC en Longfellow, dice que la marcha se vincula con el currículo en curso sobre educación cívica. "La marcha de este año es importante para mí para asegurar que ninguno de nosotros se vuelva perezoso o demasiado cómodo con las libertades que tenemos en un momento relativamente próspero en la historia estadounidense", dijo Williams. “Aquellos que vinieron antes que nosotros abrieron el camino y debemos continuar asegurándonos de que nuestra generación actual y la próxima disfruten y protejan estas libertades y asegurarnos de que todos los estadounidenses dispongan de ellas e incluso más”.

 
La participación del distrito en la marcha fue organizada por el Departamento de Participación Familiar y Comunitaria y las escuelas recibieron transporte al evento a través de la Fundación SAISD.

 
“Estamos eternamente agradecidos de poder estar aquí”, dijo el Mayor retirado Howard Huff, instructor de LOTC en Mission Academy y YMLA. “Es una tremenda oportunidad para que los estudiantes vean esto de primera mano y apoyen algo más grande que ellos mismos. Es muy importante no solo aprender sobre lo que el Dr. King ha hecho y algunas de las cosas que dijo en los discursos, sino también salir aquí y ver su impacto y lo que significa para la ciudad y lo que significa para los estadounidenses en general”.
