When Zoe Gonzalez heard about the Agricultural Science program at Burbank High School, she knew she had to go.  

 
The junior, who commutes more than 20 minutes each way from the eastern end of the county, relied on the testimony of an aunt and a good friend to sell her on the career and technical education program. 

 
She was immediately hooked. 

 
“I come here just for the program,” Gonzalez said. “My future career is a veterinarian, so I want to major in animal science. The classes here help me get to where I want to be.” 

 
Gonzalez, who is now the president of Burbank’s chapter of the FFA, jumped right in to the program her ninth grade year, raising a pig as soon as she could.  

Her tenth grade year, she raised two breeds of pigs, a Duroc and a Cross, which earned sixth and eighth place respectively at the Bexar County Junior Livestock show.  

 
She also competed and caught in the Calf Scramble during the 2024 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, earning $1,500 toward the purchase of animals this year.  

 
So she is showing two pigs, again. Her female pig, Sunrise, is competing this week at the San Antonio Junior Livestock Show, and the male, Brownie, will be competing on Valentine’s Day. 

 
It’s a lot of work, but Gonzalez said she would not have it any other way. 

“It’s really fun and I like it,” she said. “It’s a lot of hands-on work too. It teaches you time management, commitment, as well as responsibility, because the animals have to be fed twice a day, so it motivates me to get up on time to come in.”

Cuando Zoe González se enteró sobre el programa de ciencias agrícolas en Burbank High School, supo que tenía que ir.  
 
La estudiante de onceavo grado, quien viaja más de 20 minutos ida y vuelta desde el extremo este del condado, se basó en el testimonio de una tía y una buena amiga para convencerla del programa de educación profesional y técnica. 
 
Se enganchó de inmediato. 
 
“Vengo aquí solo por el programa”, dijo González. “Mi carrera a futuro es ser veterinaria, así que quiero especializarme en zoología. Las clases aquí me ayudan a llegar a donde quiero estar”. 
 
González, quien ahora es la presidenta de la división de la FFA en Burbank, se incorporó al programa en su noveno grado, criando un cerdo tan pronto como pudo.  
 
En su décimo grado, crió dos razas de cerdos, un duroc y un cross, que obtuvieron el sexto y octavo lugar respectivamente en la exposición de Bexar County Junior Livestock.  
 
También compitió y capturó en el Calf Scramble durante el San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo de 2024, ganando $1,500 para la compra de animales de este año.  
 
Así que ella va a exhibir dos cerdos, otra vez. La hembra, Sunrise, competirá esta semana en el San Antonio Junior Livestock Show, y el macho, Brownie, lo hará el día de San Valentín.
 
Es mucho trabajo, pero González dijo que no lo haría de otra manera. 
 
“Es muy divertido y me gusta”, dijo. “Es mucho trabajo práctico también. Te enseña a administrar el tiempo, a comprometerte y también a ser responsable, porque hay que alimentar a los animales dos veces al día, así que me motiva a levantarme a tiempo para hacerlo”.
