Viviana Castilleja was on her way to take her grandmother home from a music club fundraiser at Peter Piper Pizza last month when she saw something catch her eye: fire.

She and her family were traveling on Edison Drive when she saw flames shooting from the top of a house. She told her mom what she saw.

“My mom knocked on their door,” she said. “They didn’t answer. After a couple of tries they finally answered and my mom told them, ‘Your chimney is on fire.’”

The residents evacuated and Castilleja’s mom called 911. Castilleja got to see firsthand how firefighters do their jobs. 

“The firefighters were cool,” she said. “We were able to sit in the truck. It had a lot of gear.”

She even got to try on the chief’s jacket.

“It was heavy,” she added.

When the Wilson team heard about what the 9-year-old had done, they were so excited.

“We are so incredibly proud of our Viviana,” Wilson principal Cynthia Lopez-Odesky said. “She is the essence of what it means to be a Wilson Bear—courageous, quick-thinking, and compassionate. Her bravery and level-headedness in such a critical moment truly embody the values we hold dear. Viviana's actions not only reflect her strength of character, but also the kind of leader she is becoming.”

Castilleja, who has attended Wilson since kindergarten, is in music club, chess club, robotics, and Gifted and Talented Education. The school, she said, is in her family’s genes. Her parents met there. 

“My whole family came here,” she said. “I just love it. All of my friends and the teachers are so nice.”

And as for fire safety, the fourth grader has some sage advice.

“If they see a fire, tell an adult immediately so they can call 911 and tell them to evacuate.”


Una estudiante con reacción rápida avisa a un residente de un incendio

Viviana Castilleja estaba en camino de llevar a su abuela a casa después de una recaudación de fondos para un club de música en Peter Piper Pizza el mes pasado cuando vio algo que llamó su atención: fuego.

Ella y su familia iban por Edison Drive cuando vio llamas saliendo desde lo alto de una casa. Ella le dijo a su mamá lo que vio.

“Mi mamá tocó su puerta”, dijo ella. “No respondieron. Después de un par de intentos, finalmente respondieron y mi mamá les dijo: «Su chimenea está en llamas»”.

Los residentes evacuaron y la mamá de Castilleja llamó al 911. Castilleja pudo ver de primera mano cómo los bomberos hacen su trabajo. 

“Los bomberos son geniales”, Dijo ella “Pudimos sentarnos en el camión. Tenía mucho equipo”.

Incluso pudo probarse la chamarra del jefe.

“Estaba pesada”, agregó.

Cuando el equipo de Wilson se enteró de lo que había hecho la niña de 9 años, se sintieron muy emocionados.

“Estamos increíblemente orgullosos de nuestra Viviana”, dijo la directora de Wilson, Cynthia López-Odesky. “Ella es la esencia de lo que significa ser un Bear de Wilson: valiente, de pensamiento rápido y compasivo. Su valentía y nivel de cordura en un momento tan crítico realmente representan los valores que apreciamos. Las acciones de Viviana no solo reflejan su fortaleza de carácter, sino también el tipo de líder que se está convirtiendo”.

Castilleja, quien ha asistido a Wilson desde el jardín infantil, está en el club de música, club de ajedrez, robótica y en educación para talentosos y sobresalientes. La escuela, dijo, está en los genes de su familia. Sus padres se conocieron allí. 

“Toda mi familia vino aquí”, dijo. “Simplemente me encanta. Todos mis amigos y los maestros son muy agradables”.

Y en cuanto a la seguridad contra incendios, la estudiante de cuarto grado tiene algunos sabios consejos.

“Si ven un incendio, díganle a un adulto inmediatamente para que puedan llamar al 911 y decirles que evacuen”.
