Fourteen San Antonio ISD student athletes have been awarded scholarships through the 2020-21 Valero Alamo Bowl. This year marks the largest number of scholarships awarded in the Alamo Bowl’s history, with over $1 million split between the high school and collegiate programs and over 150 winners. Each scholarship recipient will receive $7,500 award to go toward their college education. They will also be invited to attend and be recognized at the 2020 Valero Alamo Bowl.
"We are so proud of the SAISD students who have earned this year’s Valero Scholarship, and we appreciate the support that Valero so generously provides," said Liz Ozuna, executive director of Advanced Academics. "These students represent a level of excellence and all around personal success that also represent the efforts of their parents, teachers and school and District staff to create the conditions for them to achieve at the highest of levels academically and personally. Congratulations to this year’s recognized scholars!"
Angel Isaac from Edison High School was selected as this year’s Brincat Award Winner, a special distinction for a top applicant. The Brincat scholarship is given in honor of 2008 Valero Alamo Bowl chairman, Bob Brincat, a tireless advocate for the Bowl’s scholarship program who passed away after a courageous fight against lymphoma.
“I am super excited and grateful for this,” said Angel, who recently declared he will be attending Amherst. “But, I still need to focus and do my best in school even though I got this award. I'm the Valedictorian and being the first person to walk across the stage means a lot to me."
The scholarships were awarded based on academic achievement, teacher recommendations, financial need, involvement in extracurricular activities and varsity sports as well as honors received and a personal narrative.
A record 84 San Antonio area students representing 71 different high schools were selected as Valero Alamo Bowl Student-Athlete Scholarship recipients and will share in $630,000 in awards to attend the college of their choice.
“While 2020 has presented unprecedented challenges, the Valero Alamo Bowl is unwavering in its commitment to deliver a positive impact to our city and looks forward to safely hosting all of our partners, fans, scholarship recipients and the visiting teams according to the Alamodome’s successful safety protocols,” said Clay Jett, chair of the 2020 Valero Alamo Bowl. “With the support of our loyal ticket buyers, partners and Valero, we are elated that for the fifth straight year Valero Alamo Bowl scholarship programs will award over $1 million to deserving San Antonio area students.”

Ilse Rodriguez, Brackenridge High School – Ilse has been a member of the varsity soccer teams for four years and is a captain of the team. She is also a member of Brackenridge High School’s JROTC program and the National Honor Society. She plans on going to Texas A&M University.
Dayanh Rubio-Gomez, Highlands High School – Dayanh has been a member of the Highlands High School marching band for four years and is the current drum major. She has also been involved with the mock trial team at Highlands and has been a member of the student council. She plans on going to Rice University to get a degree in political science.
Emily Martinez, Fox Tech High School – Emily has been a member of her school’s varsity basketball team for three years. She has also spent time volunteering for the Red Cross, Food Bank, and Salvation Army throughout her high school career. She plans on going to the University of Texas at Austin and pursue a career in the medical field.
Marco Campos, Fox Tech High School – Marco has been a member of his school’s swimming team for three years. He is also a state qualifier for Texas Youth and Government and is involved in National Honor Society. He intends to go to the University of Texas at Austin and get a degree in electrical engineering.
Jade Gibbs, Burbank High School – Jade is a two-year member of the volleyball team and is also a decorated member of her Academic Decathlon team. She also participates in National Honor Society. She intends on attending Sam Houston State University and studying anthropology.
Levolea Wallace, Sam Houston High School – Levolea has been a captain of the varsity volleyball team for three years, a captain of the varsity basketball team for two years, and a captain of the varsity softball team for one year. When she’s not captaining one of her teams, she does community service projects with her chapter of the ALO Christian Sorority. Levolea plans on attending the University of Houston.
Leslie Rogers, Sam Houston High School – Leslie is the captain of her robotics team at Sam Houston and is also a member of the marching band. She has also won 1st place in the team competition with her academic decathlon team. She wants to go to Texas A&M University to study architecture.
Elisabeth Gutierrez, Lanier High School – Elisabeth is a varsity tennis and track athlete. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and student council. She plans on attending Penn State University to study interior design.
Faith Lopez, Lanier High School – Faith is a member of the track and field and football teams. She is also co-captain of the cheer team and a participant in mock trial and art club competitions. She intends to go to St. Mary’s University and obtain a business degree.
Chyna Smith, St. Philip’s Early College High School – Chyna is the student government president at St. Philip’s and is an active participant in Upward Bound. She has earned the Bronze and Silver awards with the Girl Scouts of America. She plans on attending the University of Houston to pursue a degree in biology with intentions to become a physician assistant.
Angel Isaac, Edison High School – Angel is the captain of the varsity golf team and is the drum major of the Edison marching band. He is very active throughout his school’s community as the president of both the National Honor Society and as class president. He wants to enroll at Yale University with plans to go into the medical field.
Abraham Guadiano, Jefferson High School – Abraham captains his school’s football team and has been a member of the team for four years. He participates in mock trial and is involved with the National Hispanic Institute. He plans on attending the University of Texas at Austin to study biology.
Angelina Salinas-Sosa, Jefferson High School – Angelina has been a member of the school’s band for two years. She also spends her time volunteering for the school’s annual blood drive and helping recruit students for the International Baccalaureate program. She plans on enrolling at the University of Pennsylvania to pursue a career in nursing.
Dynasty Perez, Young Women’s Leadership Academy – Dynasty has been a member of the varsity volleyball team for three years. She is a part of her school’s Student Athlete Leadership Council and Mu Alpha Theta chapter. She plans on attending the University of Texas at Austin to pursue a career in ministry.
Estudiantes reciben becas de Valero Alamo Bowl
Catorce estudiantes atletas de San Antonio ISD han recibido becas a través de Valero Alamo Bowl 2020-21. Este año cuenta con la mayor cantidad de becas otorgadas en la historia de Alamo Bowl, con más de $1 millón de dólares dividido entre los programas de preparatoria y colegiales, y más de 150 ganadores. Cada beneficiario de becas recibirá un premio de $7,500 dólares para su educación universitaria. También se les invitará a asistir y ser reconocidos en el Valero Alamo Bowl 2020.
"Estamos tan orgullosos de los estudiantes de SAISD que se han ganado la Beca de Valero este año, y apreciamos el apoyo tan generoso que proporciona Valero", dijo Liz Ozuna, directora ejecutiva de los Estudios Académicos Avanzados. "Estos estudiantes representan un nivel de excelencia y éxito personal general que también representa los esfuerzos de sus padres, maestros y personal escolar y del Distrito a fin de crear las condiciones para que se desempeñen a los niveles más altos en lo académico y personal. ¡Felicidades a los estudiantes reconocidos de este año!".
Angel Isaac de Edison High School fue seleccionado como el Ganador del Premio Brincat, una distinción especial para un solicitante superior. La beca Brincat se otorga en honor a Bob Brincat, un defensor incansable para el programa de beca del Alamo Bowl, quien fue presidente de Valero Alamo Bowl en 2008 y falleció tras una valiente lucha contra linfoma.
“Estoy súper emocionado y agradecido por esto”, dijo Angel, quien hace poco declaró que asistirá a Amherst. “Pero aún debo concentrarme y dar mi mejor esfuerzo en la escuela, aunque haya recibido este premio. Soy el estudiante más sobresaliente de mi clase y ser el primero en cruzar el escenario significa mucho para mí".
Las becas se otorgaron en base a los logros académicos, las recomendaciones de los maestros, la necesidad financiera, la participación en las actividades extracurriculares y los deportes varsity, al igual que los honores recibidos y una narrativa personal.
Un número récord de 84 estudiantes del área de San Antonio que representan 71 escuelas preparatorias diferentes fueron seleccionados como beneficiarios de la Beca de Estudiantes Atletas de Valero Alamo Bowl y compartirán $630,000 en premios para asistir a la universidad de su elección.

Ilse Rodriguez, Brackenridge High School – Ilse ha sido parte del equipo varsity de fútbol por cuatro años y es la capitana del equipo. También es miembro del programa de JROTC de Brackenridge High School y de la Sociedad Nacional de Honor. Ella tiene pensado asistir a Texas A&M University.
Dayanh Rubio-Gomez, Highlands High School – Dayanh ha sido miembro de la banda de marcha de Highlands High School por cuatro años y actualmente es la bastonera. Ella también ha participado con el equipo de juicio simulado en Highlands y ha sido miembro del consejo estudiantil. Ella tiene pensado asistir a Rice University para recibir un título en ciencias políticas.
Emily Martinez, Fox Tech High School – Emily ha formado parte del equipo varsity de baloncesto de su escuela por tres años. Levolea Wallace, Sam Houston High School – Levolea ha sido capitana del equipo varsity de voleibol por tres años, capitana del equipo varsity de baloncesto por dos años y capitana del equipo varsity de softball por un año. Cuando no está dirigiendo a uno de sus equipos, realiza proyectos de servicio comunitario con su división de ALO Christian Sorority. Lavolea tiene pensado asistir a la University of Houston.
Leslie Rogers, Sam Houston High School – Leslie es la capitana de su equipo de robótica en Sam Houston y también es miembro de la banda de marcha. Ha ganado el primer lugar en su competencia de equipo con su equipo de decatlón académico. Ella quiere asistir a Texas A&M University para estudiar arquitectura.
Elisabeth Gutierrez, Lanier High School – Elisabeth es parte del equipo varsity de tenis y atletismo. También es miembro de la Sociedad Nacional de Honor, la Sociedad Nacional Honoraria Hispánica y el consejo estudiantil. Tiene pensado asistir a Penn State University para estudiar diseño interior.
Faith Lopez, Lanier High School – Faith es miembro de los equipos de atletismo y de fútbol americano. También es cocapitana del equipo de porrismo y una participante en las competencias de juicio simulado y del club de arte. Tiene pensado asistir a St. Mary´s University y obtener un título de negocios.
Chyna Smith, St. Philip’s Early College High School – Chyna es la presidenta del gobierno estudiantil en St. Philip´s y es una participante activa en Upward Bound.
