SAISD Spotlight: Travis Early College High School Associate of Arts in Teaching program with San Antonio College
Teachers of the future are getting a head start in the profession with the Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) program that was launched this year at Travis Early College High School. The program is a partnership with San Antonio College taught at Travis ECHS by the dynamic Principles of Education instructor Clinton Roberson. Students in the program will graduate high school with their associate in education. The AAT places students in elementary classroom settings to practice the art of teaching. The future educators are earning their practicum at Advanced Learning Academy at Euclid and Bonham Academy, the latter of which has a dual language program.
The impact the AAT program has had on students is exemplified by fraternal twins Emma and Sarah Vargas. Sarah has wanted to be a teacher since she was a child. The AAT has only confirmed that goal. Meanwhile, Emma’s eyes have been opened to the impact teachers have on their students’ lives and now says she has found her calling. Both sophomores say their experience working with dual language students has them now aiming to earn their bilingual certification in college. The AAT program requires students to have 16 practicum hours in the classroom. The twins blew past that mark with more than 40 practicum hours each.
