Sam Houston High School “wall-breaking” ceremony to highlight Bond 2020 renovations
05/15/2024

May 15, 2024

See students and district officials take ceremonial sledgehammers to a wall, demonstrating the work that will soon renovate beloved East Side campus

What:
A traditional groundbreaking ceremony has been reimagined as a “wall-breaking” ceremony with the simple substitution of sledgehammers instead of shovels. This fun twist on tradition will celebrate the major renovations Sam Houston High School will receive under SAISD’s 2020 bond program.

Students will add celebratory sounds to the wall-breaking ceremony, as participants enjoy the presence and performances of the Hurricane band, cheer and dance team members, athletes, theater students and JROTC students.

Who:
District 2 Trustee Alicia Sebastian
Deputy Superintendent Patti Salzmann
Senior Executive Director for Planning and Construction Yvonne Little
Principal NaKeshia Bibbs
Representatives from KAI Enterprises and Gilbane Building Company

When:
May 16 (Thurs.) – 10 a.m.

Where: Sam Houston High School, 4635 E Houston St, San Antonio, TX 78220
Parking available in campus lot

Construction will be in full swing this summer at Sam Houston High School, when building demolition begins, followed by work on the foundation for a new black box theater and new competition gym.

As part of the $45 million in upgrades, the school will receive the following:

New competition gym
Renovated locker and training rooms
New mat room and weight room
Athletic concourse
Renovated existing gym
Renovated auditorium
New gallery area and black box theater space
Relocated and expanded dance studio
New student entrance, concourse area, and learning stairs

Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2026.

Sam Houston High School is one of 11 SAISD campuses where major renovations are under way through the district’s 2020 bond program. Improvements for 16 other schools are in various stages of design or planning. Renovations have been completed at two schools: Bowden Academy and J.T. Brackenridge Elementary, with work at Rogers Middle School, CAST Med High School and Highlands High School expected to be completed by the end of fall.

San Antonio ISD voters passed two propositions totaling $1.3 billion in November 2020. For more information about Bond 2020, visit bond.saisd.net.
