SAISD Spotlight: Burbank High School Farm’s preparation for the school year included planning a bountiful baby summer

Who doesn’t love baby pigs? The agricultural science staff and FFA students at Burbank High School have been working through the summer on its breeding program to ensure the school year begins with baby farm animals. New piglets due to be born on the farm on Aug. 3 (from a sow named Judy) will join a family of 2-week old piglets. Two more sows (named Peanut Brittle and Rosita) are expecting piglets Aug 7.

Visit with the agricultural education team and FFA officers to learn more about how the agriculture program at Burbank is growing, including a reestablished Ag mechanics program. The 5-acre farm is currently inhabited by pigs, goats, rabbits, and multiple variety of fowl — Silkies, Cornix quail, Bobwhite quail, Easter Eggers and Olive Eggers. Baby ducks and chickens join the baby piglets in the Burbank Farm daycare center.

Burbank High School Agricultural Director Shelby Parker and the Burbank FFA officers will be at the Burbank Farm on Monday, Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon. The farm is located at the back of campus at 1002 Edwards St., 78204.
