SAISD SPOTLIGHT: Advanced Learning Academy senior Mizael Solis is 2025 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist
Mizael Solis, an Advanced Learning Academy student since the 4th grade, has earned the distinction of being the district's only 2025 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. The staff at ALA say Solis has demonstrated an outstanding ability to think critically and creatively. His teachers describe him as thoughtful, insightful and humble. They applaud him for always being willing to explore his passions deeply and think about the world through an empathetic lens.

Solis is among the academically talented high school seniors who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will earn a National Merit Scholarship and the Merit Scholar title.
