SAISD SPOTLIGHT: Highlands High School teacher Noah Lipman is a veteran teacher educating first-time voters on Election 2024

Noah Lipman has been walking seniors through the 2024 presidential election via his AP Government and Politics class. He has been registering students eligible to be first-time voters and helping them experience how the election process works. Among the assignments leading up to Election Day on Nov. 5, Lipman assigned his students to make predictions of not only how national, state and local races will go, but also which party will control the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The Election 2024 lesson culminates in a watch party on Election Night. Lipman and his students will gather at Big Lou’s Pizza (see below) to watch the results come in from across the nation. Lipman says the overall goal is to see how the class learns about the issues without getting lost in all the rhetoric. One priority is to teach students how to respect others who vote for different candidates.

“The key is I want students to be civically responsible and follow the news,” says Lipman. “You should vote. Serve on a jury. Pay your taxes. Understanding what’s going on in the nation and the world is key. Follow the news every day. Not just the headlines, but understanding the ramifications.”
