For six decades, Highlands High School athletes have played in the same competition gym, with few modifications over the years. On Dec. 12, the school will usher in a new era of competition with a community-wide celebration to mark the completion of the largest portion of Bond 2020 work at the campus: a new competition gym to replace the 1958 gym, a secondary gym and athletic support spaces.

Celebratory activities include:
• 4:15 p.m. - pep rally in new competition gym
• 4:45 p.m. - ribbon ceremony in competition gym
• 5:15 - 6:00 p.m. - Open House of the new athletics spaces
• 5:30 p.m. - “Tailgate” event featuring food and music by the Highlands High School mariachis at entrance to athletic addition

Highlands High School is one of 17 Bond 2020 major renovation projects currently under construction or that have been completed. In November 2020, San Antonio ISD voters passed two propositions totaling $1.3 billion for major renovations and security, technology and HVAC upgrades.

The $49.6 million in bond funds allocated to Highlands High School is paying for the renovation of 31,000 square feet of existing campus space and a 43,000-square-foot athletic addition.
• Existing campus space was renovated to new locker rooms and coaches’ offices
• The addition includes the new competition gym, as well as a new secondary gym, weight rooms, locker rooms, trainer rooms, seminar rooms and coaches’ offices
• Additionally, the school’s band pad was relocated and the bus loop rerouted
• HVAC was installed in the new or renovated areas of the school

The overall project is expected to be completed in spring 2025.
