MORE: Approximately 83 students are in the AAT program at Travis. Students who graduate will receive an Associate of Arts degree in Teaching. Upon graduating from high school, students would be qualified to start working as Instructional Assistants. They would need only two years of college to obtain their Bachelor of Arts in Teaching. Most AAT students specialize in elementary education.
This is the second year of the program that features ninth to 11th grade students. Next year will be the first graduating class. At this year’s pinning ceremony, ninth graders will receive AAT t-shirts and hats, 10th graders will get an AAT lapel pin and polo shirt, and the 11th graders will receive an AAT Polo pullover jacket. The Pinning Ceremony is designed to reinforce the student’s confidence in AAT and to enhance the student’s program wardrobe.
“SAISD has created a pathway that smoothly transitions students into the teaching field in a quicker way,” Roberson said. “It allows them to have their first experience as teachers in high school. It helps solidify the student’s desire to become an educator.”
