SAISD SPOTLIGHT: Brackenridge High School debuts its “Peace Room”
Based on student requests, SAISD has developed “Peace Rooms” at some of our campuses. Research has consistently shown that students, especially teenagers, need social and emotional support in schools just as much as they do for their academics. The peace room supports students who need a moment to process strong feelings or de-escalate a situation. They can work through conflict and repair relationships. Student groups discuss common topics such as anxiety.
SAISD has already committed more than $2 million to open 14 peace rooms in 2025.
A $200,000 federal grant from Bexar County helped fund the staff mental health first aid training and specialized furniture accommodations. Just last month, the Sam Houston High School peace room started welcoming students. It did not take long for the space to see approximately 45 students per day. Brackenridge High School is hosting a grand opening for their peace room on Wednesday, March 23. (see below)
