NEWS RELEASE
Steve Garcia has been named head football coach at Brackenridge High School.
Garcia leaves Lanier High School where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator the past five seasons. During that span, the Voks won two district championships in 2020 and 2021. He also was Lanier’s head baseball coach since 2022.
“I have been around long enough to remember when Brack dominated in every sport,” said Garcia, who is a 2001 graduate from Lanier High School. “That is what makes this job very exciting. The foundation has already been laid.”
Garcia inherits a Brackenridge Eagles team that has made the UIL state playoffs nine times in the last 15 years. The team’s last playoff appearance was in 2020.
“I feel I am very knowledgeable and very capable of transitioning into this new role,” said Garcia. “It helps that I am going just across the bridge here from the west side to the downtown area. There are a lot of similarities. We share the same group of kids. I am ready for this.”
Garcia’s plan is to emphasize the run on offense and to feature a 3-4 defense that dominates in the trenches. Brackenridge competes in District 12-5A-II. Other schools include Burbank, Edison, Highlands, Sam Houston, Jefferson and Lanier high schools.
"Coach Garcia has worked many years in San Antonio ISD and he understands our students and community,” said Fred Anthony, SAISD senior executive director of athletics. “Steve will be a great fit for the Eagles, and I have no doubt he will make the Brackenridge community proud.”
